All About Assessments with Dr. Ariel Eckfeld [IEP 141]

Listen Later

We’re so excited to welcome Dr. Ariel Eckfeld, a pediatric neuropsychologist, to the show! Dr. Eckfeld has always been interested in brain-behavior relationships and understanding how the things that happen in our brain and our mind affect the way that we interact with people, both at school and later on in work settings.

Today we’re talking about quality assessments, that critical step required in order for us to advocate on behalf of those children who are in need of our services.

We hope you join us!

Show Highlights:

  • Dr. Eckfeld shares an overview of her educational and professional experience.
  • A school psychologist focuses on how a child is doing in the academic setting. A neuropsychologist sees the academic part as a small piece of the puzzle.
  • As Dr. Eckfeld explains, she looks at the academic achievements of children across all of the different areas, but she also looks at language skills, how they are able to express themselves and understand other people, their behavior, and the higher-order skills, among other criteria.
  • As part of an assessment, it’s important to ask the teachers, the parents, and the child what their own concerns are.
  • Dr. Eckfeld addresses how COVID-19 has changed the evaluation process.
  • There is no such thing as waiting for the perfect environment to perform testing.
  • No matter if assessments have taken place virtually or in person: Valid interpretations about a child’s functioning can still be made in this moment, as well as the interpretation of what you think is going to be helpful for them.
  • Dr. Eckfeld shares her advice on quality, comprehensive assessments, and what to look for in a skilled professional.
