General David Berger issued his “Commandant’s Planning Guidance” over a week ago and major changes are in store for the Marine Corps.  We’ll talk about what General Berger’s guidance means for amphibious ships and the future, forward deployments and how the Marine Corps is hitching its wagon to the US Navy.

Speaking “truth to power” is an easy thing to say at a confirmation hearing but that is Navy Secretary Richard Sherman’s task after President Trump got his 10,000 foot screwdriver out and ordered Navy Achievement Medals awarded to US Navy JAG officers assigned to the Chief Gallagher prosecution rescinded.

As in the cases of the USS Fitzgerald and the USS McCain, it IS possible that meritorious work was done even if the overall effort was a failure — will Secretary Spencer make such a determination and take it to the President or will he simply salute and execute.

We talk about it.

A disturbing picture is being painted of life in Marine Corps battalions, no longer do senior enlisted Marines scrutinize, account and inform Marines multiple times each day — that time tested system has been replace with text messaging to “get the word out.”

A consequence of any system like this is less interaction between junior leaders and junior enlisted Marines with that unit’s senior leaders which is never a good thing.
