Mac asks Gunner to weigh in on the ability to have a candid discussion about gender in the Marine Corps… and he does.  We also get to the bottom of the foodie controversy — “foil on… or… no foil on” when one is smoking a brisket.

“Posse Comitatus” is a term that most in the US Military have heard but few understand the historical origin of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, we’ll talk about it; and… we’ll hear LtGen H.R. McMaster’s, USA (ret) final speech given before the Atlantic Council on Tuesday evening during which he stated that the West has “failed to impose sufficient costs” on Moscow for its aggressive behavior.

Gunner answers an email that asked “how do I teach my girlfriend how to shoot, my USMC teaching style might be too brusque for her?”

As the National Guard gets pointed towards the US-Mexican Border, the discussion turns to the dangers of the border and using active-duty troops & also old “JTF” missions that both Mac & Gunner went on “back in the day.”

And finally, Mac’s JTF mission went out of a facility in San Diego County that housed the SERE School (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) that Gunner went through, they talk about it.

In the last 24 hours the Marine Corps has suffered two Class A Aviation Mishaps, (1) an AV8B Harrier from the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) crashed upon take-off from the Djibouti International Airport with the pilot ejecting and currently in stable condition at a US Military medical facility in Djibouti, there were no civilian casualties; (2) a CH-53E from the 3rd Marine Air Wing crashed in the vicinity of El Centro California killing all four crew members on-board, with no civilian casualties reported.

We also remember today the death by assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate his incredible life and work as we listen to the speech he gave in Memphis, Tennessee the night before he was killed, a speech he gave to support striking sanitation workers there.

This is the sixth segment of ALL MARINE RADIO’S “Battlefield Studies” series.  The series is designed to give leaders who have led in combat a forum to voice the lessons that they learned while in contact with the enemy for the benefit of leaders who will lead on future battlefields.  

SITUATION: in February of 1968 Captain Ron Christmas was the Company Commander of Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines when 2/5 was tasked with clearing the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong forces that had occupied the city of Hue in the Thura Thien-Hue Province of South Vietnam during the Tet Offensive.  The Battle for Hue is remembered as the most violent urban combat that US Forces would participate in during the Vietnam War and Captain Christmas and the Marines and Sailors of Hotel Company would distinguish themselves mightily during this fight which none had been trained for prior to moving to Hue.

We look back at a GREAT episode of ALL MARINE RADIO — amateur Irish historian Stephen Foley was the catalyst that brought the issue of “The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima” to the light of day.  Stephen joined Mac to recount his initial observation & feelings that there was an error in the identities of the second Flag Raisers, discovered while he was on disability leave, recovering from surgery with plenty of time to devote to his hobby of USMC World War II history and Iwo Jima history specifically. A noble researcher and gentleman, Stephen Foley is a wonderful interview and his story is now an incredible piece of Marine Corps history.
