  • A New Exhibition Celebrating the Life of Poet Gwendolyn Brooks

    A Poet's Work in Community, a new exhibition at The Morgan, celebrates the life and work of American poet Gwendolyn Brooks (1917–2000). It's comprised of more than forty manuscripts, broadsides, and first editions, and tells the story of Brooks emergence as a mentor to aspiring Black artists. Curator Nic Caldwell joins us to discuss the exhibition, which is on view until June 5.

  • 'Out Of Time', A New Show Featuring Asian-American Playwrights at The Public Theater

    A new show at the Public Theater features five new monologues written by five acclaimed Asian American playwrights. It's titled "Out Of Time." These monologues are written for, and will be performed by, Asian American actors over the age of 60. The performances both celebrate the diversity of the Asian American experience, while also shedding light on the struggles and challenges that elders in that community have faced in the past few years. The show was commissioned by the National Asian American Theater Company, and its founder, Mia Katigbak, will join us to discuss, as well as perform a selection from her monologue. The show's director Les Waters will join the conversation as well. "Out Of Time" runs through March 13.

    For many, the Oscar-winning "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) is one of the best, if not the best, action films ever. George Miller's return to the post-apocalyptic wasteland world of the Mad Max series was nearly 20 years in the making, and it only got crazier when filming began. In the new book, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, author Kyle Buchanan presents an oral history of the beloved action film, with over 130 interviews with the cast and crew of the film, including Miller, as well as stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Buchanan joins us to discuss the project and the legacy of "Mad Max: Fury Road."

  • John Thompson's Autobiography

    [REBROADCAST FROM January 15, 2021] As head coach of the men's basketball team at Georgetown, John Thompson built the program into a powerhouse. He recruited players like Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and Allen Iverson. He was also one of the only coaches of color in college basketball at the time, and he used his position to advocate for student-athletes of color throughout his career.

    Before he died this past August at the age of 78, Coach Thompson had written an autobiography called I Came As A Shadow. The Undefeated reporter Jesse Washington talks about readying the book for publication as well as Thompson's impact on the game. And he's joined by Coach Thompson's son, Ronny Thompson, who played for his father from 1988 to 1992.
