Millions of Americans took up gardening this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. For new gardeners, how to sustain their new hobby and how to build a garden that is a part of a sustainable environment are important considerations.

President Joe Biden took sweeping action Wednesday to rejoin the Paris Climate Accord, reverse the Muslim ban and establish a national mask mandate, among other orders. Biden enters office with a host of challenges including, a pandemic, an economic crisis, a deeply divided country and a diminished standing around the world.

Today’s inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take place in the shadow of a pandemic, without the usual celebratory crowds and balls. Biden also takes office just weeks after a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, and amid one of the most divisive eras in American history.

The throng of thousands that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 included devotees of QAnon, a conspiracy theory that got its start in the shadowy corners of the Internet. Since 2017, QAnon’s baseless beliefs have spread in an online environment with little to no guardrails to contain it. Since the riot, Twitter, for one, has purged 70,000 accounts. But users are flocking to new sites, such as Gab and Telegraph, which have amassed thousands of new users since the insurrection.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in December that there is an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment in Ohio. Like many other states, Ohio can't procure the drugs necessary to carry out lethal injection. At the same time, public opinion is shifting, and some politicians are reevaluating the need for capital punishment.

Law enforcement across the U.S. remains on high alert leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s Inauguration on Wednesday, although planned armed protests by pro-Trump supporters passed yesterday without serious incidents.
