  • On Writing Characters; A Few Quotes

But today I want to talk about Characters and where they come from.

Recently, an article came out on a newsletter that I am a huge fan of, “Writer’s Write”. And it was basically a collection of quotes from famous authors about the issue of character development. It was a fascinating list and I want to read a few of them here for you and discuss them a little in terms of how they impact my own writing life.

Naturally, I will share that link in the show notes for those people interested in taking a look at it. And, if you are a writer, feel free to sign up for their newsletter. I get it and I enjoy it. Not a terribly long read, but some great links in there.

Huge thank you to Jim Wink who is an active supporter through Patreon. Won't you consider joining him in helping the show along?

  • It's Halloween! So, what frightens me and why?

Wanna know what makes me afraid of things going bump in the night?

Well, this time last year I did a show about what makes people scared. I thought that was a fairly interesting topic to talk about since it’s Halloween, and this is the time to be scared. I think my earliest memories about being scared probably were in a movie theater in Steger Illinois where we were watching a movie and I remember burying my head in the seat of the chair because I was terrified of whatever it was that was on the screen. Fast forward a few years I remember watching another movie, this time I was scared but I still watched it.

The movie was called Funeral Home. Funeral Home and it was originally released as Cries in the Night. A 1980 Canadian slasher film directed by William Fruet. Basically a teenager, played by Lesleh Donaldson, spends the summer at her grandmother's inn. Of course it is a former funeral home.

How about literature, what scares you and how?

I remember reading a book about ghosts when I was little and not being particularly scared. In reality, stories about ghosts, even supposedly term ones, don’t really frighten me. Never quite understood why. Although I highly suspect that has to do with my own experiences with the paranormal as a child. Generally speaking they weren’t terribly scary. I just never experienced a terrifying situation with the ghost.

However, I did read a book when I was younger called The Oddkins by Dean Koontz. That book scared the crap out of me. Just the way it’s written rose really kind of terrifying. The only reason I think it scared me as much as it did was because the book itself is deeply unsettling.

If you look up on Amazon, you’ll find the following description, “The Oddkins, secret toys that aid and inspire children facing serious problems or sorrow, battle a band of evil basement toys in their search for a magic-sustaining toymaker.”

The terrifying part for me is that evil toys can exist. It kind of goes back to the old school poltergeist seen where the clown comes to life. I don’t care who you are, that’s one of the scariest things you’ll ever see on film. And we love it. Fact of the matter is we love being scared.

Want to know more about what scares me in literature? Take a listen!

  • Our Trip to The Buckhorn, Labor Day, a Gym, and Passion

Good Morning Everyone and welcome to another episode of All Things Writing.

Labor Day 2021 was amazing fun for me. I am the father of an autistic adult child. He is currently down in Fishersville, Virginia attending a special tech school just for people with his kinds of needs.

I love Labor day for a couple of reasons. The first is that I really feel that at the end of summer we need a day to just sort of celebrate all things summer and enjoy hanging out with our family and friends. It is a time to unwind.

However, that is not what the day started out to be.

You see, Labor Day got its start in September of 1882. The unions in New York City decided to have a parade to celebrate their members being in unions and to show support for all unions. According to some sources, at least 20,000 people showed up at the event.

Other areas of the country followed in the footsteps of New York and soon gatherings sprung up and in in 1887 Oregon, Massachusetts, Colorado, New York, and New Jersey all made Labor day a state holiday.

Grover Cleveland, in 1894, signed a law making Labor Day a national holiday. This was only after most states had already passed their own laws establishing a Labor Day holiday.

Labor Day is the unofficial end of hot dog season. Although I argue hot dogs are pretty much an all year thing. I am apparently not in the minority on this one as according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans eat around 20 billion hot dogs annually.

Why do I tell you any of this?

This labor day my wife and I stopped in a wonderful little bed and breakfast called The Buckhorn Inn and Tavern. It is located in Churchville, Va. It is an amazing place. First off you should know it was built in 1811. While it was destroyed in a fire, but was rebuilt exactly as it was. The first floor houses this amazing little dining area, a check in area, and a few rooms.

The Innkeeper is named Rob. Super amazing host. He ran his hind end off to make sure our stay was as amazing as possible. The room we stayed in was in the second floor. Super comfy beds and really just a nice layout.

The Buckhorn was once host to Confederate Army Commander Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. As I stood on the balcony overlooking the street, I considered what it might have felt like in those times to look down at the carriage receiving area in front of the building.

The Buckhorn was a carriage stop along the road and likely played host to any number of famers persons throughout history who thought it only a minor occurrence to stop at a house along the route of a carriage.

I tried to put myself in the shoes of those people exiting their carriage ride, dusty and maybe a little sore from the trip, and being welcomed to the home. What was it like to see a home like that for the first time as a child of these families who looked upon the place with wonder?

What does this have to do with Writing?  Passion! Restoring a home takes passion, getting a new holiday on the books requires passion. So does writing.

  • Hanging out with Author Russell James!

Welcome everyone to All Things Writing. In case you wandered onto our little podcast and did not know it, I am your host, Bryan Nowak, podcaster, and fiction author of dark tales, SciFi, and suspenseful mysteries.

My guest today is none other than the author of the book “The Playing Card Killer” Mr. Russell James.

    Join us while we talk about all kinds of things like;

    • When did you get your start in writing and what influenced you to write?
    • Reading the playing card killer, I am reminded of the Russian Chess Board killer Alexander Pichushkin, because you use the symbology of the playing cards in your book. I am curious, how did you come up with this idea?
    • How did you build his character profile? Was it based off someone?
    • I am really curious why you chose a shipping yard as a setting. Is there a personal connection? I know that a lot of times I have a personal connection to the kinds of places I center my characters.
    • You have quite a few books out, I am going to ask you to pick out a favorite, and why?
    • Do you find that when you write, you have to put together an outline to follow?
    • Where do you start from in the creative process? For me, I have to start at the main character’s point of view and then work them toward where I want to ultimately find them.
    • Did you actively study to be a writer? What did you have to learn to perfect your craft?
    • I am pretty sure I make mistakes daily. What mistakes do you think you made at the beginning?
