 Meet Dr. Nick Colangelo,  Nick has spent decades in the in the Field of Substance Use Disorder in many roles. In 1975 Dr. Colangelo began his this career as the Aftercare Coordinator at Runnell's Hospital in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. Nick was also on the Somerset Council on Alcoholism. There he was a Crisis Counselor, and he was the Director of the Kelly House in Somerset, New Jersey that was a 12 bed detox center. In 1979, Nick became the director of the Sarah Mayo Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was also the Hospital Administrator of 200 beds and a detox center of 27 beds. In 1979, Nick worked for LifeMark Corporation, and that was Houston, Texas. There, he was the Director of the Westgate Hospital Alcohol Rehabilitation unit with 40 beds. And at this time, he was also an Acquisition Researcher, and a Speaker, Trainer and Consultant in Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Texas. In 1982, the Scranton family, the founders of the City of Scranton, donated their summer residence in Waverly, PA to a Geisinger Affiliate to become Marworth treatment center. In 1982, Nick became the president of Marworth. At at that time he designed it to build a freestanding family residence there of 20 beds. The treatment center had a 72 beds for drug and alcohol treatment. He also designed and opened up an adolescent Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center with 60 beds on Shawnee on the Delaware and Pennsylvania for more with in 1989. By 1989, Marworth was recognized as one of the top 20 rehabs in the Country to attend, that is out of about 4500 facilities that operated in the US at that time.Nick designed and developed a 60 bed treatment center, Tully Hill Treatment Center in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Tiffany Griffiths is a licensed clinical psychologist who has private practices in Clarks Summit, Dunmore, Exeter, Peckville, and Kingston, PA. She is from the Scranton area in Northeastern Pennsylvania where she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton. She went on to pursue her doctorate in clinical psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. She chose to specialize her education and training in the area of diversity. Dr. Griffiths’ internship experience was gained at Chicago’s Loyola University where she worked at the University’s Counseling Center providing outreach, evaluations, therapy, and supervision to students, faculty, and staff. Her internship class at Loyola was the first to become accredited by the American Psychological Association. 

Since receiving her doctorate and starting her group practice, Dr. Griffiths has become a qualified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) instructor. THE HONORABLE MARK POWELL

LACKAWANNA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Mark Powell, District Attorney of Lackawanna County, has made combating the opioid crisis a top priority of his administration. He is the co-chair of the Lackawanna Recovery Coalition, which works to reduce opioid overdose deaths in Lackawanna County by connecting people with substance use disorder to treatment, implementing lifesaving harm-reduction strategies, advocating for long-term recovery, and working to reduce stigma surrounding the disease of addiction.  

 In October 2019, District Attorney Powell established an Overdose Fatality Review Team to study overdose deaths in Lackawanna County to determine the root causes of addiction-related deaths and implement evidence-based solutions. DA Powell also initiated a Fresh Start Program for lower-level drug offenders to supplement Treatment Court. Fresh Start gives offenders the chance to choose treatment instead of jail and avoid having a criminal record. He is also a board member of the Lackawanna County Treatment Court, which established and operates the Recovery Bank in downtown Scranton, a peer-driven recovery support center that focuses on whole-person healing of mind, body, and spirit.

DA Powell is on the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association’s Executive Board and serves on its Education and Training Committee. In addition, he was appointed by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to serve on the Continuing Legal Education Board, which oversees education programs for attorneys statewide.

Before being elected DA, Powell was a partner in the Powell Law firm in Scranton for 27 years. He earned many professional accolades, including the distinction of being a Board-Certified Trial Specialist in both Criminal Law and Civil Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. For 12 yea

Meet ATTORNEY FRANK BOLOCK ,

 Today's guest is Attorney Frank J. Bolock, Jr. Frank has practiced civil and criminal law throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania for almost 43 years. In addition to his law practice Bolock serves as the president, CEO of Treatment court Advocacy Center of Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation, and he's also the project director of the Recovery Bank, which we'll speak about today to community Recovery Resource Center, developed by the treatment court advocacy. The mission of the treatment court advocacy is to assist treatment court participants and alleviating obstacles to their compliance with the requirements of treatment court, and also to assist the participants in engaging fully in their recovery. The Recovery Bank Community Recovery Resource Center has as its mission connecting treatment court participants and people new to recovery with peers and long term recovery and recovery resources. Frank is also served as assistant district attorney with the Lackawanna County District Attorney's Office, where he prosecuted a wide variety of criminal cases ranging from Homicide to misdemeanor offenses, compiling an outstanding record of success as a prosecutor. Following several years as an assistant district attorney, Attorney Bolock began his criminal defense practice which continues throughout the Pennsylvania federal court systems.

    Additionally, Bolock has served as special advocate to the Lackawanna County treatment court. Today Frank comes in to talk about the genesis of the recovery bank and how that came about. Frank is a friend. And we get to speak about this genesis of the RECOVERY BANK over the course of three decades, where Frank was introduced to service, and with that experience, he was able to help shepherd, the recovery bank with a lot of other great people.

Dr. J Anthony Quinn is a Board-Certified Orthodontist who practiced in Northeastern Pennsylvania for the past 44 years.
For the past 35 years he has been involved with a recognized 12 step program and a weekly Caduceus meeting that was designed for health care professionals to help them face the special challenges they face when they first become sober.

Meet John Johnson ( BHT),

     John Johnson "JJ" is a Behavioral Health Technician at Avenues Recovery Communities in their Lake Ariel Residential Inpatient facility. We met about a 2 years ago in the middle of the pandemic there and immediately became friends. Today JJ stops by to tell us who he is, then how he fell into this roll, and what working in the Recovery Field has done for him & loved ones. What is a BHT?

A behavioral health technician is a psychiatric technician who assists a Licensed Therapist / Counselors specializing in treating patients with behavioral disorders. These include Substance Use Disorder , Opioid Use Disorder, eating disorders, gambling addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder, among others. Technicians support the work of psychiatrists/Therapists by monitoring patients and recording their physical and emotional symptoms. When working in residential living facilities, they may also assist with daily activities and safety.

The Mantra of this position is " OBSERVE AND REPORT", but in the drug and alcohol treatment field it seems a bit more dynamic than that. This position requires sincerity, personal recovery, and deep listening ( Empathy). JJ showed me how this is done last year and we get to discuss how this happened.

    Meet Tee Martin, Beatnik, gentleman , outlaw, musician, and clinician extradiore just celebrated 36 years of sobriety.

         Tee has been at Alina Lodge since 2003, prior to this he was the Clinical Coordinator of the "Dunes" in East Hampton, NY, also worked as a Counselor at the Marworth Adolescent Facility "Shawnee" in Pennsylvania throughout 1990's. We discuss the earlier setting of his life in Scranton's section of Bellevue, to his departure to New York City in the earlier 1960's when his addiction truly matured. We also discuss the impact inpatient treatment had on him in the 1980's at the newly opened "Marworth" drug and alcohol treatment center.
Tee has had a profound impact on my life, and my views concerning addiction and it's recovery. This is the first time I was able to discuss his childhood in such detail in a way that left me moved in regards to the realities we all may carry quietly.  His voice has always had a hypnotic effect on my imagination, the City he describes will seem like an alien planet to many. Yet all the same this landscape of  "Bellevue" forged some giants, and  Tee is one of them in the field of treatment.

Patrick McDonough is a Licensed Social Worker working as a therapist at Integrative Counseling Services. In addition to being an LSW, Patrick is a Certified Advanced Addictions Counselor (CAADC), holds a Certificate of Competency in Problem Gambling (CCPG), and is EMDR trained. Patrick has experience working in clinical and business development in the residential treatment in the field of substance use disorder. John has completed both the Rutgers University School of Addiction Studies and also the Rutgers University Advanced School of Addiction Studies. He has had additional education and training in organizational management and leadership through the Levinson Institute and additional clinical training and study has occurred at institutions including Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, Villanova, Georgetown, and Syracuse Universities. John served for six years on the Executive Steering Committee for the New York State Education Department’s, Professional Assistance Program (PAP) and has extensive experience working with impaired professionals, young adults and adolescents.
