I've managed to have a few close calls with death, and this was an incident that happened 16 years ago that haunted me for a long time until someone I didn't expect let me in on a secret.

I've had people reach out to me across social media. (It's one of the reasons I always keep my DMs open.) They come to me with questions and anxieties about issues of identity. I've responded with some version of this letter to them, and I'm sharing it in case anyone needs it.

I remembered a short story about that same trip to SeaTac that I wanted to share.

I spoke to a couple Japanese businessmen for a minute, and made them grin when I mentioned I drove to and from Japan a couple days prior.

At least in North America, driver's licenses are a seeming rite of passage and something one simply has. Consider the default ask for identification in North America is, "Can I see your driver's license?" despite passports, identification cards that don't permit driving, and other such credentials are perfectly valid and legal for those places (eg. age-restricted locations and purchases).

Some thoughts about getting one from a perspective not many people have experienced.
