Joshua and Aaron have broached this topic before, but it is front and center once again with the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN. Many people are calling this a race issue. While some are saying these police officers are just "a few bad apples." Here are some numbers: Between January 1 through March 30, 2020, 228 people were shot and killed by police in the United States. That is over 2.5 people killed every single day by the people who have sworn to "Protect and Serve" them. Is this a systemic issue? Joshua and Aaron hash it out.

This episode originally aired in July 2019 on the since retired Pertinent Information Podcast. In this episode, Josh and I talk about the current state of the two-party system in the United States. We go into how we got here, and do third party candidates have a shot at ever being elected to significant political positions.
Right around when this episode originally aired, Justin Amash, who was originally a Republican, became an independent. And in April 2020 joined the Libertarian Party. Amash has served as a United States Representative for Michigan's 3rd congressional district since 2011. In 2020, he started a campaign to run for President as a Libertarian. However, he abandoned his campaign just a month in.
On Twitter, Amash commented on the current state of our two-party political system saying: “Electoral success requires an audience willing to consider alternatives, but both social media and traditional media are dominated by voices strongly averse to the political risks posed by a viable third candidate. The new reality of social distancing levels the playing field among the candidates in many respects, but it also means lesser-known candidates are more dependent on adequate media opportunities to reach people.”

Basically since its inception, people have been "interpreting" the Constitution. People and politicians have been trying to mold and explain the document in ways that agree with their personal views. More recently, the term "Living & Breathing" have been used to describe the Constitution. By definition, a "living document" is a document that is continually edited and updated. Does this describe our Constitution? Joshua and Aaron take on this topic in this episode of the America: Beer. Baseball. Tyranny. Podcast.

In this time of COVID-19, small businesses are begging the government to consider them "essential" so they can remain open. Joshua takes exception to this. In his mind, everyone and every profession in "essential." Aaron, on the other hand, doesn't think it's accurate or harmful to consider some professions essential and others non-essential. The guys also talk about if some professions contribute more to society than others. This is a good one!

We have the military, police departments, security agencies, etc. that are funded and run by the government. Because of this, some people may think it is the government's job to protect us. But is it? If it's not the government's job, who's is it? We have to pay taxes that fund these agencies, so shouldn't they be used to protect us. And maybe the biggest question is CAN the government protect us? Joshua and Aaron talk through these questions and more on the 10th episode.

Yep. You read that right. In this episode, Joshua tries to convince Aaron that price "gouging" is a good strategy for businesses to utilize when their products have become or might become scarce. Aaron isn't so sure that should be the first strategy implemented. Who do you agree with?!?

On the surface, regulations are put in place to level the playing field and make sure companies operate properly, safely, etc. But guess what?! Many (maybe even most) regulations do little more than get in the way and complicate things. In this episode, Joshua and Aaron talk through regulations that are complicating products that could be made by small businesses to help keep people healthy during this COVID-19 pandemic.

More guns were purchased in March 2020 than any other month on record. Among those purchases, many were first-time buyers. Should these new firearm owners need to show that they are capable of owning, firing, maintaining, storing, etc. before they are allowed to purchase? In this episode, Joshua and Aaron debate the pros and cons and logistics of training people in order to be responsible gun owners.
