Sherwood Boys with (Mike Somerville)

In this episode of American Civil War & UK History, host Daz was joined by historian and author Mike Somerville to discuss the famous Sherwood Boys and their role during World War II.

Mike has written two fantastic books focusing on the battalion and the experiences of the men who served in the Sherwood Foresters, bringing their wartime story and bravery to life.

The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) had a long and distinguished history before becoming part of today’s Mercian Regiment. Formed in 1881 from the 45th and 95th Regiments of Foot, the regiment served across the British Empire and in many major conflicts.

During the Second World War the Sherwood Foresters raised 14 battalions which fought in numerous theatres of war. They saw action in Norway in 1940, later serving in North Africa and Italy.

The Sherwood Foresters played an important role in the global conflict, continuing a proud tradition of service that lives on today in the Mercian Regiment.

Alexandria At War With (Madeline Feierstein) Episode Three: A City of Hospitals 

In this episode of Alexandria at War, produced by the American Civil War & UK History podcast, host Daz is joined by historian Madeline Feierstein of Rooted in Place to explore the hospitals of Alexandria during the American Civil War.

During the American Civil War, Alexandria, Virginia became a major Union medical center after its occupation in 1861. Its river and rail connections made it ideal for transporting wounded soldiers from nearby battlefields.
By war’s end, the city had more than 30 hospitals, including the Mansion House Hospital and L'Ouverture Hospital, treating thousands of Union soldiers throughout the conflict.

The Battle of Olustee With ( James Cosgrove )

In this episode of American Civil War & UK History host, Daz was joined by James Cosgrove, host of Project Past and the Distance Drums podcast, to discuss the Battle of Olustee — the largest Civil War battle fought in Florida.

The Battle of Olustee (February 20, 1864) was the largest Civil War battle fought in Florida. A Union force advancing west from Jacksonville was defeated by Confederate troops under General Joseph Finegan near Lake City, halting Union efforts to control the region and secure supplies and recruits.

Episode Two: Crime in an Occupied City 

In this episode of Alexandria at War, produced by American Civil War & UK History podcast, host Daz is joined by historian Madeline Feierstein of Rooted in Place to examine crime in Alexandria, Virginia, during the Union Army’s occupation of the city.

Following Union occupation, Alexandria came under military rule, with a Union governor and provost marshals enforcing order in place of civilian courts. Crime levels fluctuated as war, economic disruption, and the presence of Union troops strained the city. The arrival of large numbers of formerly enslaved people seeking refuge added further pressure on housing and resources and was often, unfairly, linked to crime. To maintain control, Union authorities imposed new regulations such as curfews, travel passes, and loyalty oaths, reshaping daily life in occupied Alexandria.

World War I: Feeding the British Army With ( Pete's Living History )

On this episode of the American Civil War & UK History podcast, host Daz is joined by living historian Pete Neal of the TikTok page Pete’s Living History to explore how the British Army was fed during the First World War.

Feeding the British Army in the First World War was a logistical struggle as much as a necessity. Soldiers relied on basic, calorie-rich rations such as bully beef, biscuits, bread, jam, tea, and tinned vegetables, with hot meals from field kitchens when supplies reached the line. Disruptions caused by mud, shellfire, and the German blockade often reduced these comforts, leaving men with cold, repetitive fare like Maconochie stew or pea soup, sometimes made with horsemeat. In these conditions, parcels from home and the daily rum ration played an important role in sustaining morale as well as bodies.

Alexandria At War With ( Madeline Feierstein ) 
Episode One: The Invasion of Alexandria

In the first episode of Alexandria at War, produced by the American Civil War & UK History podcast, host Daz is joined by historian Madeline Feierstein to explore the Union occupation of Alexandria, Virginia, and its significance in the early days of the American Civil War.

Alexandria, Virginia was captured by Union forces on 24 May 1861, shortly after Virginia seceded. Its location near Washington, D.C., made it strategically important. The city was taken with little resistance, though Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth was killed during the occupation. Alexandria remained under Union occupation for most of the conflict, serving as a major logistical, medical, and supply hub, with numerous hospitals established to care for wounded soldiers. The capture helped ensure the security of Washington, D.C., throughout the war.
