Richard Wurmbrand’s Marx & Satan takes readers beyond the political arguments surrounding Marxism and examines what Wurmbrand believed were its spiritual roots, including:

A Romanian pastor who refused to stop preaching Christ, Wurmbrand spent fourteen years in Communist prisons. He endured isolation, brutality, and persecution under a system determined to silence Christian faith.

In Marx & Satan, Wurmbrand searches through Marx’s writings and personal history for an answer to a troubling question: Was Marxism’s hatred of Christianity simply the result of atheistic politics, or did its rebellion against God begin much deeper?

His argument is startling.

Wurmbrand traces Marx from writings that once contained Christian language to poetry and other works filled with images of destruction, defiance, hatred, and rebellion. He examines Marx’s correspondence, the people who surrounded him, and the Communist movements that later carried his ideas into nations around the world.

To Wurmbrand, the persecution that followed was no historical accident. He believed the same hostility toward God that could be found in Marx’s thought eventually appeared in systems that closed churches, imprisoned pastors, punished believers, and attempted to replace faith in God with loyalty to the state.
