This week we are joined by Melissa Gallardo of Bonita Fierce Candles. Melissa started a candle making hobby during the pandemic because she loved burning candles and figured she could make her own. After a few jokes about selling the candles she was making, she realized that she could actually do that. When she realized that this could be a business, she made a big financial investment she couldn't turn away from. And now, we're all lucky to have her Latinx inspired candles.

This week we have Kayla Castañeda, founder of Agua Bonita, joining us to share her story.

For some of us, the decision about quitting our jobs to pursue our business full-time takes years or many attempts before actually doing so. For Kayla, the decision was made for her when her company went under in the early pandemic days and left her unemployed.

When that happened, Kayla decided it was time to take a chance on herself and decided to start Agua Bonita with co-founder Erin PonTell. As of today, Agua Bonita has raised over 2 million in venture capital funding. For context, only 2.7 percent of all venture funding goes to women CEOs... Now think about what percentage of that goes to Latina CEOs.

If you haven't already, think about your 2021. What were your wins? Which goals did you reach? Which goals didn't you reach? Why do you think you reach the goals you did and why don't you think you reach the ones you didn't?

While working her corporate job after graduation, Liz realized she couldn't do that for the rest of her life. She had other desires and passions she wanted to explore that she put aside in college. That's when Liz made the decision to start painting on the side and continued to do so for the next three years.

Eventually she knew she wanted to make the jump into creating art all day. She quit her job without telling anyone and that's where her painting career started. 

Liz Flores is a painter and muralist based in Chicago. Her work experiments with how the human condition—with its interplay between emotion and memory—can be represented abstractly. She engages everyday human experience and the female body by using shape, color and the human form as a mode of visual storytelling.

Her mural work can be found throughout the Chicagoland Area and New York City. In addition to working with private and commercial clients like Target and the Chicago Bulls, her paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout Chicago and are driven by her interests in womanhood, belonging and inner life.
