Establishment Republicans have always hated Trump, and the fact that his supporters have demanded true border security and immigration enforcement has played a major role in that animosity. The president has finally secured the funding necessary to keep his promises. Pivoting to a Reagan-style amnesty deal would be a disaster that could fracture the MAGA coalition.
