Side-scrolling platformer games are everywhere, from old school consoles, to modern iOS and Android games, and now you can make your own with MakeCode Arcade. But how do they actually work? This video shows the various layers involved, including background artwork, tile maps, sprites, and the relationship between the camera, map, character, and background. Wall collisions between the character sprite and tile map are not enabled here for simplicity.

NOTE: Most platformers are two dimensional, the 3D portions of this video are only meant to help illustrate how the layers and motion parallax works.
