We have covered a myriad of seasons of life in this series but we were unable to cover them all, so my hope is that after today, no matter what season of life we find ourselves in, we will be able to turn to the Psalms and find the words that we need for that season.

Honest to God

The truth is, no matter what clothes we buy, technology we might have, or systems we put in place. Those things in themselves cannot bring the powerful joy we are reading about today. This Joy must come from elsewhere.

Honest to God

When we pray the Psalms, whether or not we identify with the pain personally, we weep with those who weep. We declare that any human tragedy is my tragedy. We cry out to God, together with humanity, to fix it.

I suspect that many of us still know that sense of deadness and dryness David described in Psalm 32. For some of us our experience with sin and shame is every bit as intense as what David described, but for most of us it’s characterized more by a general joylessness in life.

And if we’re ever in doubt, or if our vision is ever clouded, we need only stop, look, and listen for the wonder of the Lord around us. There are many Psalms we could look at that help us do this. They are all an exercise in being wooed by our Creator. They’re all an exercise in seeing God at work in creation around them. And so this morning I want to take a look at Psalm 104 as a case study in the practice of cultivating Wonder.
