Paul concludes his letter to Titus with an urgent call to not waste his limited opportunity to make a difference in this life. It is possible to exist, and even be active, yet not be fruitful. The gospel will produce in us a confidence of eternal comfort in the future that motivates us to live the most meaningful way today.

Remembering where we used to be can bring appreciation for where we are now. Paul reminds us that "we too were foolish and disobedient" before God saved us. As we begin looking at chapter 2 of Titus, we see Paul urge Titus to "promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching." Paul's first instruction to Titus is to appoint elders to lead the church in each town. More important than organizing ways to gather more people is the raising up and empowering of leaders within the local body. But who should lead? Paul's criteria was character over skill. Gospel truth leads to godly living and godly living is the standard for leaders.
