Our hope is often more focused on what may happen in this temporal world and to rely on people, rather than focused on our eternal God and His promises. When we lean too much in the temporal direction, we miss out on the peace and joy God provides for us to rise above our current circumstance. Before we can look to God and fully rely on Him for hope and all its blessings, we must develop a deep relationship with Him to truly know Him. When we come to know His character, a prerequisite of trusting Him, we can go from uncertainty to assurance of hope of eternal life. When we keep our eyes fixed on eternity, our perspective on everything else changes.

Elisha, the man God chose to be his successor, observed Elijah’s lifestyle of obedience and passion for the Lord and wanted this same legacy. Mentorship is vital to Christian discipleship. Jesus mentored the twelve to know Him, and through Him to know the Father in order to represent God’s love in the world. Mentors and their mentees focus on essential qualities that are crucial for the development and continuance of faith practices as a way of life. The mark you make on the world will not be based on your success or wealth but on your willingness to act on the truth of God. Through Scripture, we see one major theme running from beginning to end—obedience. It is the primary way our faith is both tested and affirmed. Obedience to God is also the surest way to leave a legacy you will be proud of a thousand years from now. How you respond to the commands of God, influences those around you and becomes a part of your legacy. Praise God that He has given us His Holy Spirit to work in our lives, inviting us to acts of obedience.

One of the keys for us to grow closer to Christ and to be more like Him is to deepen our faith and trust in Him. Without this, it is impossible to move on to spiritual maturity. Leaving a legacy of faith and trust in God is invaluable. It goes against the norm of the world today, a world that says you should put your trust in anything but God. The truth is that God alone is wholly trustworthy and in no one else—not a friend, relative, company, president, or king—can we fully place our trust. This is one of the most important truths we can pass on to the generations.

And they will only talk about our love for Jesus if it was evident in our lives. We need to be proactive about the legacy we want to be perpetuated. We should indeed stride towards leaving a legacy of love, a legacy of Christ’s love.
