21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Rejection is a theme and an experience often associated with the season of Lent. As the forty days of Lent grow closer to the week of Jesus’ Passion, we find more and more that rejection runs through all of Jesus’ teachings about what awaits him in Jerusalem.

"But to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

“We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized. In other words, James and John, you are going to suffer for my sake. It costs something to be great in the kingdom. 40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”11So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
