  • Judge Who Gave Former Drug Dealer a Second Chance Swears Him in as Lawyer 16 Years Later
Edward Martell was once a high school dropout facing a 20-year drug conviction. Instead of giving him the maximum sentence, judge Bruce Morrow gave Martell probation and a challenge.
Marrow told Martell the next time he walked into the courtroom, he wanted him to have made something great of himself.
“He said, ‘I challenge you to be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company instead of being out here selling drugs,’” Martell told Deadline Detroit. “And I love a challenge.”
Fast forward 16 years, a now 27-year-old Martell is standing in front of Judge Marrow, but for a very different reason this time. This time, he is being sworn in as an attorney after passing the state bar in Michigan.
The path for Martell has been far from easy. While competing his GED, his guidance counselors tried to persuade him not to pursue a legal career. His prior criminal record might ruin his future career plans, but he never gave up.
After completing his associate’s degree, Martell received scholarships for both his undergraduate studies and law school.  He went to gain a lot of experience by clerking at the District of Columbia’s Federal Public Defender’s office. He also worked as a writer and researcher at the Perkins Law Group.
Martell had plenty of supports by the time it came to take the bar exam. One being Judge Morrow, with whom he never lost touch with after all those years.
Martell completed a 1,200-plus page submission describing the process he took to turn his life around.
“The main thing they look for is candor. I let them know I am remorseful—that I’m downright embarrassed,” Martell reported to WAPO. “I am the same person, but I don’t think like that anymore. I’ve evolved.”
After only 15 minutes, Martell was approved to be a lawyer. He still works for the Perkins Group, but now will be practicing as an attorney instead of a researcher.
His dream that he worked so hard for finally came true and it is all thanks to judge Morrow.

  • Woman Pays for Stranger's Cake to Honor Late Son's 35th Birthday

A mother is keeping her late son’s memory alive by engaging in random acts of kindness.

Carolyn Mick from Indiana went to buy for her son’s birthday cake at a Plainsfield Kroger grocery store but quickly found out a stranger had already paid for it, according to WISH-TV.

The woman left Mick a note which was then shared on the Town of Plainfield Chatter Facebook group.

“Today is my son’s 35th birthday, his 5th one in heaven,” states the note. “In his memory, I’ve paid for your cake. Please enjoy, make special memories and hug your children and loved ones tight. My son loved cake!”

The message was signed, “Toni, Tyler’s mom.”

Mick posted a picture of the letter on Facebook with attaching a caption to help convert her appreciation to Toni’s kind gesture.

“Dear Toni.. you know who you are and I want to express how moved I am,” Mick wrote. “This means so much that my husband and I cried together. With the turmoil of things going on, it reminds us of what really matters: LIFE!”

Mick said in a statement to PEOPLE: “The reason it meant a lot was that I just lost my mother and was pondering on how to celebrate her birthday coming up in June. Never thought about paying for a cake. We have it in us to be kind and supportive of others. You never know what a simple cake can mean to someone else.”

Mick’s post stated flooding with positive and heartfelt messages until the stranger finally revealed herself identifying as Toni Wilson-Taylor in the post.

“This is Tyler,” she stated with an picture attached of her late son. “May God bless your family as you celebrate a loved ones birthday today. Enjoy.”

Wilson-Taylor also wrote, “I’ve been carried all day by these wonderful caring prayers. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. I never dreamed buying a cake would spread so much love and carry my family thru a tough day. So blessed.”
