Normally a bat mitzvah is a time where a young lady has a huge party to celebrate the passage into adulthood.
Instead of celebrating herself, Lindsay Sobel wanted to celebrate others. Living in California Sobel has become well aware of the homeless population and how many lacked shoes.
“I noticed a lot of them were in really awful living conditions, no way any person should have to live. On top of that, I noticed a lot of them did not even have shoes on,” she said in an interview with A Might Girl. “At 12 years old, I was like, ‘Wow, people don’t have shoes?’ It kind of put things into perspective for me.”
Sobel decided to launch Shoes for Soles, a charity that collects and distributes shoes for Southern Californians in need. The charity only collects shoes that are still in good condition.
“Part of the requirement for having a bar or bat mitzvah is that in some way you give back to your community, give back to the world,” Sobel told KNX-1070 News Radio. “I decided I wanted to give back as big as I could. That one pair of shoes could change someone’s life."
Since starting, Shoes for Soles has collected an astonishing 30,000-plus pairs of shoes.

Fox 29's Alex Holley calls the Andie Summers show to explain how she landed her grandfather a three night stay at the Waldorf Astoria in Rome!
Holley's family lost power in Texas due to the horrendous winter storm. The "Good Day Philadelphia" co-host was able to secure a hotel stay for her Grandfather in efforts to keep him warm and safe.
"My parents were so excited they told Grandpa I got them a room at the Waldorf Astoria LOL it’s nowhere near that fancy but here they are pretending!!" Holly, wrote in an Instagram post. The post included touching pictures and video of her grandfather pretending he was at the real Waldorf Astoria.
The video went viral catching the attention of the real Waldorf Astoria. Within no time they reached out to Holley. "They loved the fact that we found a way to make ourselves smile and keep it lighthearted," Holley said on the conversation. "They think everyone should have the attitude that my grandfather has, especially during times like this. Then they offered him a three night stay at the Waldorf Astoria in Rome!"
Holley went on to say, "It's funny how things work. When my grandfather was younger and working in the army he actually went to Italy and threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. He told himself one day I hope to come back just like the song. Now at 91 there is a chance that we'll be able to take him back once it's safe."
