It’s been very apparent in recent years that watches that were once within reach are now very much not, and that’s a bummer. The gut feeling is that getting a good watch now requires more saving, less food and a greater sense of financial recklessness and associated guilt—but it’s not true.

I’d like to say everything I’ve ever done in the watch industry has been valid, but there are more times than I’d care to admit when I’ve made a proper door knob of myself. Well, today is confessional time, because I’m going to lay out all the embarrassing things I’ve done for your candid entertainment.

It’s clear that right now, some watch brands are doing incredibly well and some are really struggling. There doesn’t really seem to be a whole lot in between. But why is that happening, and what can the failing brands do to make things better?
