Endurance – Mustn’t Grumble
Steven and Nathan explain to us why ‘mustn’t grumble’ is more than just a saying – it is a biblical principle that we need to follow.
Are you familiar with the account of the Israelites’ grumbling? If not, then you may want to watch this episode. The lesson to be learned from this Scripture might not be so comfortable, but it is very important.

Are you in a busy season right now?
There’s nothing wrong with being busy! But, when you’re experiencing a period of time with a little more to do than normal, don’t forget to take 5 and, in my case, make yourself a mug of tea and enjoy what you’ve already managed to get done!

Sometimes we just need to exercise a little less caution, and be a bit cheeky.
I once heard a great sermon from a preacher who was talking about how the Holy Spirit sometimes works in what appears to be a sneaky way. Now, I’d interpret that to mean that the Holy Spirit works in a cheeky way – sometimes the Holy Spirit does things we were simply not expecting.
And, sometimes, I think we could all do with a little more boldness. And, perhaps, even be a bit cheeky sometimes.
There was a huge pile of wood opposite the end of our driveway. I’d pointed it out to Jo. As a family who burns a log burner quite a lot through the colder months, I recognised that that pile of wood would be rather handy for us! I also knew that none of the local houses had chimneys, so none of the neighbours could make use of it. But, we could!
However, and quite rightly, my wife pointed that I couldn’t’ sneak over in the dead of night and simply liberate if from the grass patch where it had been dumped. It did belong to someone!
Upon walking home one day I spotted someone going into the complex that the grass belongs to, and asked them if there was someone I could ask. I felt a bit cheeky. This poor soul was, after all, simply a nurse going to see someone who was actually her patient.
I told her why I wanted the wood and she said she would try and do what she could. She did not sound hopeful!
But, a message came quickly back that she’d spoken to someone, and that the wood was ours if we wanted it. Moreover, that there was more wood we were welcome to that would be put in the same spot in the coming weeks.
Awesome!
So, if you see something you might need, just ask. You never know what the reply will be. At worse, it may be a no. But, on the other hand, it might actually be a yes.
I think, sometimes, God is actually waiting to see if we’re willing to ask for something…waiting for us to be just a bit cheeky and push the boat out a little with our prayers.
Just a thought…

When life throws you something you weren’t expecting, it’s always a good idea to get some help!
Sometimes those helpers can do no more than just listen to whatever it is you are struggling with. But, they can also have some wisdom – especially if they have also been through something similar.
Our initial reaction is something we really don’t have much say about. It’s mostly from who we are.
For example, when disaster strikes my wife is simply brilliant She isn’t fazed at all! Later on, she will reflect…and maybe cry over what happened early.
Me? Well, I crumble first! Like a chocolate tea pot.
It’s mostly how I’m made up – but I’m also brilliant later on.
I wonder who you’re more like?
Anyway, if you, like me, know that dealing with disasters is not your strong suit, then it’s best to seek help sooner rather than later. I know, from past experience, that I’m not all that good at praying off the bat. But, I am pretty good at asking others to pray instead. And that means more people are praying into whatever has goner wrong. And, that, is no bad thing!
Prayer is great. Helpers are great. So, get some helpers to pray! Then, they can check on you afterwards too.

The seas crash against the shoreline, and the shoreline gets claimed by the sea and it is the same in our lives – things come along to erode away at the very foundation of who we think we are.
When Queen Elizabeth II recently passed away, I will never forget being in our garage, having just arrived from I don’t now remember. I told the family. Jo’s first response was for her eyes to well up, and she shouted ‘No!’. I was simply lost with pain and grief because Her Majesty had a certain faith and, with her passing away, a period of uncertainty immediately dawned upon us, including a new Prime Minister. Much is going to change now.
But, it isn’t just about what may come next. It is also about what was, that is no more.
We always knew the Queen was there. For almost every single citizen of the United Kingdom, we know no other monarch as our leader. And, now, that has changed.
With King Charles III there is the certainty that I will see, in my life time, yet another change to the monarchy - as King Charles III is the oldest man ever crowned King, in British History. That is simply the way of life – things change, whether we want them to or not. And death is the one thing every single one of us is guaranteed to face at some point.
How we face it, though. That is key to how we live right now.
The Queen knew where she was going when she died. Her active, ongoing, very much alive relationship with Jesus Christ was very real to her, and very evident to any who heard her speak. She may have been our Queen for a time, but she also knew she was going to meet the King of Kings.
Life will change around us, but there is one certainty that never will: God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He will, absolutely, never change.
While the seas may eat away at the shoreline; while life’s troubles may eat away at our confidence and peace, there is one sure person to look to for certainty.
So come join me standing on the Rock of Rocks. His name is Jesus. Queen Elizabeth II was my Queen. But she was, and is, my sister in Christ. Before God we are very much equal, and that is something worth celebrating.
Queen Elizabeth II was a woman who was willing to kneel at the feet of Jesus, and so am I.
I would ask you if you are willing to do the same as she did, and as she is doing right now.

#GoDeeper
Steven begins this week’s GoDeeper by explaining that grumbling through a workout or through life is hard work. He makes the distinction between grumbling and being honest about life.
Steven gives us an example of grumbling from the bible and identifies the cause of grumbling as discontentment. He explains how to be content and concludes quite simply that we need to be content.
#GoDo
For the final segment, Nathan asks Steven some questions about his talk:
1. I gather from your talk that grumbling never helps anyone; it always makes life harder for everyone concerned. Is that correct?
2. Contentment – not always easy to achieve. But, as you say, it is ‘super important’. If we are not content, is that especially serious?
3. Do you think you grumble much?
4. If you were given a cucumber, would you be content?
Check out this week’s episode to find out how Steven answers these questions.

Introduction
In this episode of Marriage Matters, Andy B and Jo focus on finances in marriage – Money Matters on Marriage Matters, now that’s a mouthful!
Actually, as Andy and Jo discuss the issues and share their own stories, it soon becomes apparent that one episode on this subject is not enough – so they promise to come back with Money Matters Part 2!
Although, as Jo informs us there are as much as 2000 scriptures relating to money, Andy and Jo do not choose one! Instead, the episode is centred around the scripture that talks about how quarrels happen because let’s face it money and everything financial, in marriage, is in the top 10 reasons for arguments!
However, Jo brings up two other useful scriptures. The one when Jesus provides money for taxes by fishing and the women in the bible with the jar that kept on giving:
Tips and Resources
The Take Away
Andy – Andy’s Take Away is to let Jo go first! And then reflected on the fact that you don’t need any money to do whatever God is asking of you.
Jo – Burying your head in the sand doesn’t help. It’s more honouring to God, and your marriage, to have a good understanding on everything going on with the finances in marriage.

Do you ever have those moments when you’re listening to someone who is in the middle of saying something, and it is as if somebody just slapped the back of your hear. Because what they just said was absolutely not what you were expecting.
Perhaps it is the name for something you associated differently. Perhaps it is an opinion that seems diametrically opposed to other things they’re saying. Perhaps it is simply because they quoted something totally out of context.
I’ve had many of those over the years. Growing up with someone who is severely narcistic and you get used to things like that. That is quite normal, for someone like that.
However, it doesn’t help the person listening.
As we speak to others we need, of course, to be careful when we quote things. We’re gonna make mistakes. That happens. Of course it does. But sometimes it’s a bit more serious.
So, don’t be afraid to ask for some clarification, even challenging as necessary.
And let’s do all we can do, as my wife frequently reminds us, to “Say what you mean and mean what you say”.
Ambiguity is something I’ve observed used lots by some folks in church. It creates wriggle room for something they want to do, which they know won’t be popular – or righteous. So, they speak in such a way that enables them to do something other than what they intimated.
Jesus was never ambiguous – which should be enough for us really, so I’ll stop here!
