This section includes an exhortation grounded in the truth of Hebrews 1:2—that God has spoken in these last days by His Son. It employs a lesser-to-greater argument, highlighting the superiority of the message delivered through the Son and His apostles over the revelation mediated by angels under the old covenant. We are in danger of drifting away if we fail to pay close attention to what God has spoken through His Son. The author of Hebrews uses a nautical metaphor of an unanchored ship: the winds will inevitably arise and carry it away. The legally binding nature of the words given through the Son is also stressed. Since the Old Testament revelation was binding and carried punishment for the disobedient, how much greater is the weight of the word spoken by the Son. The witnesses to this word are the Son, His apostles, and God Himself. If we neglect this word and drift away, we shall not escape. Applications are drawn from later in Hebrews concerning the anchor of the soul that enters within the veil, and from Paul's warning in Colossians not to be taken captive by the traditions of men.
