Jasmin joins me in Limehouse to talk about all things London & boaty and I attempt to find out if she’s really as nice as everyone thinks. During the interrogation, we talk London boat crime, gossip about other boaters and discover that she’s “elfed” for Bob Geldof (and met Ed Sheeran). Behold…… the secrets of Jasmin.

Following the podcast, Jasmin said “Ahoy” and, before I knew what was going on, we were filming an episode of ‘This Narrowboat Adventure’ which is now live on Jasmin’s YouTube channel.

Fresh from dealing with near catastrophe (mooring pins hammered into the concrete above electricity cables), our continuously cruising London Mooring Ranger visits for a lively discussion about suspension notices, banning boats with a home mooring from visiting London in the winter, boating groups, dealing with triple moored boats, The London Mooring Strategy and working for the Canal & River Trust.

  • 029: The Edward Snowden of the Waterways aka Lindsey Hood

In this contentious and probably libellous episode, Lindsey Hood and I discuss recent changes at Springfield Marina, Carpenters Lock, London Moorings, Newbies, cake, King Salami & The Cumberland 3, The Victoria Park Facilities, Non Return Valves, Mis-functioning Water Pumps, being buried with your pets, dancing donkeys & Broxbourne.

Despite all the talk, Lindsay did not join me for cake afterwards. I ate a chocolate & pistachio brownie – alone.

  • 028 Pancho from Peru (on a Springer – not canoe)

In November 2017, as I was struggling to handle a tricky mooring situation in Little Venice, another boater helped me out. This was my first meeting with Pancho. He’s helpful … and from Peru. He’s lived on his boat for just 6 months.

In this podcast, we talk about being helpful, Faith and the nature of community – online,  in London and on the waterways. Pancho talks about his best friend’s suicide and how this affected his outlook. Joel talks about 2 incidents he experienced on the Hammersmith & City line this week.

There are several references to an earlier conversation that was supposed to appear at the end of the episode but the audio file was accidentally deleted. The interesting stuff is all in this section though.

  • 027: New London boater meets old jaded one.

‘Angry Boater’ will be live at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, twice daily, from Aug 6th to 26th (not Tuesdays). Showtimes are 3.45 pm to 4.45 pm at Finnegans Wake and 7.25 pm to 8.25 pm at City Cafe.

Barry Ferns has been on his narrowboat for just 3 weeks. He has already had a window smashed & a solar panel stolen.

Joel has been boating  for 7 years. Once someone knocked on his boat at 3am and ran off.

This week, they are both moored in West London.

On top of boating, Joel & Barry also have the comedy world in common. Joel was a comedy promoter from 1994 to 2012. Barry is the brains behind the Angel Comedy Club – (http://www.angelcomedy.co.uk)

Even though they’d met before, this was the first time they talked properly.

Barry has new boater questions. Joel has old boater answers. They swap their stories and discuss boats, comedy & more.

It’s a fascinating conversation which, as well as covering a range of boating issues, also reveals how Joel got to perform in Vegas and stories of rubbing shoulders with comedy’s elite.

Barry reminds Joel of his past but is Joel what Barry Ferns is destined to become?

Karl and his teen daughter continuously cruise on the Grand Union. He trades in crystals & fossils.

Here we discuss what it’s like to live on a narrowboat when you’re 13 and the challenges of getting to school without the luxury of a home mooring. We also explore what can happen when you attempt to move someone else’s boat a few feet in order to make enough space for your own. It might be acceptable in London but what about elsewhere??? (spoiler alert: I tried to do this today and it didn’t work out too well).
