Anime Was (Not) A Mistake's second annual Animasterpiece Theater concludes with one of the most smoky, seductive, and sexy films of all time. Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love (2000) has Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung play a pair of star crossed lovers, each searching for their own way out of their loveless marriage. Counting the moments through heartbeats, stalwart glances, cigarettes, and trips to the noodle stand. This movie will leave you wanting a passionate love affair of your own. Our Animasterpiece Theater event continues with Shusuke Kanedo's Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999). In his third and final Heisei-era adventure, Gamera returns to fight the flying menace known as Gyaos. Empowered by Ayana's anger, Iris grows into a true monster and becomes determined to fuse with the girl. Gamera, despite having lost his connection to humanity, must intervene before Iris can irreparably damage the balance of nature. Can Gamera win with both the odds and world's negative vibes stacked against him? Your faith in giant turtles will be restored on today's mana-charged episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake!

  • Episode 165 - AWNAM: Animasterpiece Theater: Kuroneko (1968)
Anime Was (Not) A  Mistake continues Animasterpiece Theater with the second on the bill of Kaneto Shindo's folk horror films. In Kuroneko (1968) malevolent spirits seek revenge and lap up milk in this feline furor.  After being wronged by greedy samurai, the age old trope of cats having nine lives comes front and center. What wrongs would you put up with to be with the ones you love, long since thought dead and gone? Be weary when stumbling through the bamboo grove at night, that meowing you may hear may lead you to your doom...

  • Episode 164 - AWNAM: Animasterpiece Theater: Onibaba (1964)
It's the most cinematic time of the year.  Dan and Jonathan take a little break from Anime (As if they don't do that enough already) put on their spats, and top hats and prepare for some Asian cinema with Animasterpiece Theater. The nocturnal mammals in the recording studio have given us the go ahead for our second month long film festival and we have a got quite a range for you all this year. To begin, a haunted frolic in the tall grass with Kaneto Shindo's Onibaba (1964). In the days of Japanese civil war, a small family does whatever they need to survive. Lie, cheat, covet, and steal.  Really, its just like recording an episode of this podcast. Dan is always avoiding falling into bloody pits, and Jonathan found a mask that surely won't adhere to his face...

Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, is living in the neon-coated 1980s and fighting crime outside of the public eye. Working at a museum by day, Diana meets an archeologist named Barbara Minerva (who wears glasses, eww). A stupid special wishing stone comes into their possession, but it's quickly stolen by the charming conman Maxwell Lord. Diane's secret wish is granted and her fallen boyfriend Steve Trevor returns to life. Barbara's wish is also grant, allowing her to ditch her glasses and become really mean. Diana and Steve resolve to stop Maxwell Lord from plunging the world into chaos with his inconsistent wish-granting powers. But stopping Lord may require a bigger sacrifice than Diana is willing to make. And then Barbara becomes a cat. It's complicated. So if you're ready, hop on board the nearest invisible jet and join us for the latest installment of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake. (And this episode is over two hours long, so please remember to stay hydrated.)

  • Episode 162 - AWNAM: Sinister Six XIII: Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)
Anime Was (Not) A Mistake's Sinister Six Series has all been leading up to this moment. In our first Sinister Six: Selection Jonathan is taking fate into his own hands and picking out the perfect film based on Dan's previous trajectory. After Devious Dames, Small Private Elevators, and countless Letters to Daddy it's finally time to dust off the cobwebs of Jonathan's horrifying southern gothic past. Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Pack lightly for your stay in Louisiana, you won't be staying long. There's a mystery brewing deep down in the bayou and the lingering melody of some long ago cotillion, but the most deadly aspect of this movie will be heartbreak.
