Matt is 45 at the time of this recording and had symptoms of one degree or another since he was around 10-12 years old. Symptoms were very bad when he was first diagnosed with AS at 27. He was working in a high-stress corporate sales job, drinking too much and taking lots of over-the-counter medication to soothe symptoms. Matt had a lot of difficulty sleeping and started having flares so bad he could barely walk to and from his car.
Matt grew up in a small city of around 10,000 people in rural Minnesota in the US. He was raised in a religious fundamentalist Evangelical household with his four younger sisters. His parents worked working-class jobs and were very active in church. Although he went to college for a couple of years in Wyoming, he didn’t leave his hometown until he graduated from college at 25. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and moved to Minneapolis where he worked in several different corporate positions. He became very disillusioned with the business world so went back to school for Paralegal.
He met his wife around that time and was married and had a son within a few years of dating.
He currently lives in Tumwater Washington and works in the state government as a Public Records Officer.

Craig is 37 years old and grew up on a farm in South Dakota. He always had big dreams and high anxiety. He was brought up in a stable family, his parents are still together and his mother and father both had anxiety and he now realizes how much that imprinted on him.
He dropped out of law school to be a comedian at age 23 and did some shows, but by then he was 5 years into a pretty heavy alcohol addiction to cope with panic attacks. He worked odd jobs, until he was 28 years old, at which point he had a mental breakdown and quit alcohol.
He always had aches and pains, injuries that lasted all summer, foot issues, etc. He never took care of the mental aspect after getting sober, and then the stress of 2020 spring at age 34, the pandemic kicked things into overdrive, suddenly his leg and S.I. joint were constantly inflamed to the point of not sleeping, not being able to walk. Went to dozens of doctors, orthopaedics, brain and spine doctors, and finally, he was the one who suggested an HLA-B27 test. Then finally after waiting..in Feb 2022 his rheumatologist told him biologics are the answer since he had tried NSAIDs for so long, and that he would have this for life. He didn't accept this, and that’s when he started searching (meat-only diet, CBD oil, and seed gut protocols, stretching, special hip apparatuses for relieving muscle tension, and massages.
For his career, he does freelance drone photography, auctioneering, and cattle farming with his dad.
Sonia is 40 years old. She grew up in the suburbs of Richmond Virginia with her older brother and parents until she was 12. Her father suffered from horrible depression for four years before her parents divorced. She went to live with her father after he recovered. She got pregnant and married at the age of 20. They have two kids. She was a stay-at-home mom and then went to work in her husband's family business. That's when the pain started. Once she learned the biopsychosocial model of pain, she became a personal trainer to help others get out of pain. After the pain left, she fell into a depression coupled with anxiety. That's when she joined Ralph's book discussion group. She decided to compete in kettlebell sport and embrace life on her terms.

Bio
Deena grew up in Pennsylvania USA with her parents and sister. She doesn’t have a lot of childhood memories but remembers always being told she was too sensitive, especially by her mother. Her dad was an alcoholic and her parents fought terribly for the first 4 years of her life. She was bullied a lot in school and found refuge in the art room. She went to college for two years but didn’t earn a degree. She worked in retail and has held jobs as a secretary, a volunteer at a domestic violence shelter and a dental assistant— She is now a sterile processing tech for a medical clinic. She was married and divorced twice. She has a son and two daughters, all grown. She now lives with her partner Larry in Ogden, UT.
Pain and fatigue prevented her from enjoying most things. She quit crafting and watched a lot of tv instead. She was in bed often and I couldn’t be the energetic and fun mom that she used to be. She always worked part-time as a stay at home mom, but after being fired from a call center for too many sick days, she applied for and was awarded social security disability benefits. Fibromyalgia took everything that she once was. It took her vibrancy, her energy, her social life, her mental health, and her physical abilities. However, she is doing much much better now.

Topics we cover
1-The process of seeking medical advice
2- Underlying root causes of pain (ACES, unconscious negative emotions, not enough positive to counterbalance)
3- Labeling the symptoms (when a Doctor diagnoses you with a disease, you feel relieved but then you are possibly forever trapped). It’s Dis-Ease, not Disease.
4- The power of the mind (placebos, nocebos, social media groups, unconscious thoughts and symptoms imperative)
5- How he healed and the books he highly recommends.

Lots of betrayal by people (maybe herself )in her life. One of her low’s in life was as a newly postpartum mom with severe back pain and having to carry her newborn around while she crawled on the floor. No support from people in her life including her husband. He was at work and her mother had no ability to be supportive.
She learned to rely on herself and get strong no matter what. It was for another 20 years that she would discover the mind-body connection.
Victoria Bruce is a part of a loving and supportive family. She is a registered nurse and has worked in surgery. During her time in the surgery room she saw a lot of unnecessary procedures. She then worked as a lactation consultant having a supportive role helping mothers and babies breastfeed.
Topics we cover
1. Her belief that the origin of symptoms is from repressed emotions.
2. Her belief that her body is structurally normal.
3. She is empowered by pushing herself to get out into the world/life and do the things she likes: skiing, hiking - walking, going to Zumba, lifting weights, gardening and getting back into the ocean and boogie boarding.
4. She talks about her process and that healing is her responsibility - it being an opportunity to heal herself. She gets to look within, take action, which is good news because she realizes she is not a victim to circumstances.
5. She discusses how it feels good to help others with their process because of how much she has learned about herself and her process.
6. She goes on to mention that when she has gone over her life and pulled out areas of great sadness and regret to write about them, it has proven to be very helpful and healing.
Her Influences
John Sarno’s “Healing Back Pain”,
Victor Frankel “Man’s Search for Meaning,
Dr. Aziz Gazipura “Not Nice “.
