This jewelry is part of the African culture since the 18th dynasty in the Kemet empire it was common among populations for young unmarried girl to walk around completely naked as a badge of honor for their youthful beauty wearing only waist beads, bracelets, and necklaces. When they were married they were giving other waist beads to mark her initiation from daughters only to wives. So waist beads represent all the steps of women life.
