After weeks of prelude, the Rommies have finally made it to the film that inspired Tierney’s entire theme of this year’s festival. Listen in as Tierney sings her highest praises of this innovative take on a sports biopic (“bye-opic”? “bio-pick”?), Matt and Collin harmonize over their love of the incredible comedic chops of Paul Walter Hauser, and the Rommies collectively work their way through the deep ensemble of excellent needle drops sprinkled throughout the movie.

After much confusion (“is it the animated music one? is it the nuclear meltdown one?”), the Rommies finally sorted it out for Collin’s next pick of the Fest. Plus, stick around for Tierney and Collin tag-teaming against Matt’s crackpot theories and Collin soap-boxing against his beloved Academy for not appreciating this film appropriately.

Listen in as the Rommies do an impromptu rehash of their personal rankings, discuss the innocence and awkwardness (and inappropriateness?) of young love, and settle on the TRUE Moment of 2023: Balaban’s 11-year-old sick fits.

In a surprising turn of events, Collin’s next selection for the Festival was quite well received by The Rommies across the board! Did that mean that they would show this classic the respect it deserves? In an unsurprising turn of events, nope! Listen in as they talk Some About Eve, Mostly About Not Eve, and, in Matt’s opinion, Too Much About “Bette Davis Eyes.” (But be sure to stick around as a Friend of the Pob stops by to school them on all the wonderful things this film has to offer!)

For Matt’s next selection of this year’s Festival, the Rommies go for a swim to investigate the seedy underbelly of one of Los Angeles’s most prominent neighborhoods. Alternatively, they sit around their bizarrely well-furnished apartment and dream up a vast conspiracy just to have something to do. In either case, join them as they debate this flawed, but at times fascinating, addition to the stoner noir canon.

The Rommies (and a very special first-time guest!) pack up the car and head out for a summer (month? week? day?) in the Catskills to discuss Tierney’s next pick for the festival. While there, they meet Carrie Frances D’Watermelon-Houseman, and together they team up to change the minds of snooty old white people through pobbing. Listen in as they praise this film for its 80s ridiculousness and debate perhaps the most important cinematic unanswered question of all time.

With his first selection of this year’s Festival, Collin had the sheer audacity to pick (apparently) the wrong 1940 Cary Grant comedy. While many consider this film to be one of the greatest of all time, the Rommies are considerably more divided, so listen in to find out who falls into which camp (the answer may surprise you!) and then argue about the movie’s merits (and demerits).

In a fun quirk of timing, the Rommies gather to discuss Matt’s first pick for this year’s festival mere weeks after its meteoric rise up the rankings of Sight & Sound’s iconic, decennial list of the Greatest Films of All Time.
