The Rommies (and a very special first-time guest!) pack up the car and head out for a summer (month? week? day?) in the Catskills to discuss Tierney’s next pick for the festival. While there, they meet Carrie Frances D’Watermelon-Houseman, and together they team up to change the minds of snooty old white people through pobbing. Listen in as they praise this film for its 80s ridiculousness and debate perhaps the most important cinematic unanswered question of all time.

With his first selection of this year’s Festival, Collin had the sheer audacity to pick (apparently) the wrong 1940 Cary Grant comedy. While many consider this film to be one of the greatest of all time, the Rommies are considerably more divided, so listen in to find out who falls into which camp (the answer may surprise you!) and then argue about the movie’s merits (and demerits).

In a fun quirk of timing, the Rommies gather to discuss Matt’s first pick for this year’s festival mere weeks after its meteoric rise up the rankings of Sight & Sound’s iconic, decennial list of the Greatest Films of All Time. Listen in as Matt and Tierney highlight all the things that make this such a beloved film all these years later, while Collin simultaneously tries to process his (generally indifferent) feelings on the French New Wave in real time.

The Rommies wrap up their Kubrick Retrospect-ish as they discuss The Shining, just in time for Halloween! Will they be able to navigate through their labyrinth of tangents about why hotels are gross, kissing ghosts, poor Shelley Duvall, and how many episodes of One Piece there are? All talk and no tangents make Jack a dull pob. Featuring returning special guest & faux-Listener, Jim!

The Rommies are back for the penultimate entry in their Stanley Kubrick retrospectish! They’re joined by friend of the pob Becca Sita to discuss Kubrick’s iconic fun family road trip film. Listen in as they discuss the differences between the movie and the book, what worked and didn’t work for each of them, provide impromptu Kubrick film rankings, and try to answer the age old question: “Is Stanley Kubrick bad at sex??”

After the double-whammy disappointment of a bad Kubrick and the tamest orgy ever put on screen, the Rommies rebound to continue their retrospect-ish with his iconic (anti-)war film. Listen in as they discuss the effectiveness of the messaging throughout its two distinct sections, while Matt works through his feelings on war movies and Tierney works through her unique childhood connection to the American military. Finally, Collin forgets the overarching premise of the pob and hijacks the conversation to wax poetic about one of his favorite TV series finales of all time.

In honor of the Rommies hitting this momentous achievement, they decided to continue their Kubrick retrospective with his crazy sex party themed film. Listen in to find out if they felt like the movie’s horniness was adequate for this important milestone, and then stick around as they determine how it fits into the various filmographies of the major players involved (including debating the question, “Are we sure this even IS a Kubrick film??”).

After years of either being too scared to try or being too upset by the first 5 minutes to continue watching, the Rommies finally gathered up their courage to force themselves to get through Kubrick’s iconic dystopian crime/horror film. Listen in as they discuss how the experience measured up to their expectations and then dive into the film’s various layers hiding underneath all the violence. Finally, stick around as they have a lively debate about what truly constitutes a director saying, “Fuck you.” to his/her audience.

After a brief holiday hiatus, the Rommies return to their Kubrick deep dive with a look at his classic period piece character study. Join them and their special guest as they discuss their initial reactions to the film (it was a first viewing for most!), the gorgeous cinematography, and the surprising amount of humor throughout the film. Finally (and perhaps hastily given this is only the third episode of the run), they debate where this film falls within the larger Kubrick oeuvre.
