In this episode, we're unexpectedly talking about the difficult subject of abuse, neglect, malnutrition and the general well-being of the next generations. In particular, we look at the issue of public responsibility and response and how the system protects the most vulnerable of all - children.
Recently there was a high profile case of an 8-year-old boy who died due to physical abuse by his 'stepfather'. At the same time, the child's mother was developmentally delayed and did not understand what was happening to her child. Whenever such a case makes the news (remember the "Baby P" case in Edinburgh?), people ask where the family, school, and neighbours were. So how comes nobody knew and let this happen?
As someone who has worked for years with vulnerable children close to social care and other third-sector organisations, Niko has a unique, practical perspective on the issue, and that's what you'll find in this episode. What is the system like? Why is the system failing? How can we respond as ordinary people, observers?
It's a complex subject with no great answers, more questions and the usual outcome that "kindness is the way" and there is no greater goal than a society with good mental health.
As always, we love you!
With kindness,
Niko and Klaudia
