  • Episode 10 - Broadening the Incoherence

In episode 10 of Another Time, MacLeod! (16:51-18:06), Robs Wallis (Twitter: @robertmwallis) and Daniel (@rob_a_daniel) are joined again by Dr. Chris Cooling (@chriscooling7) to talk about Highlander's return to the present, Connor's attempt to flee Madison Square Garden, and his resulting arrest.

Topics of discussion include film student cliches, "old movies" (like Silence of the Lambs, apparently), late great character actors Edward Wiley & Shane Rimmer, New York filming, Brooklyn accents, and the incoherent text.

Please be aware that the character of Garfield, played by Edward Wiley, makes use of homophobic slurs that are included in the podcast. Not to do so would be to ignore a key aspect of his character, which will be explored in future episodes.

Chris teaches at the College of Lake County in Chicago, Illinois. These include a number of online courses: https://www.clcillinois.edu/programs-and-classes/online/online-course-offerings.

  • Episode 9 - Wild Boys (AKA Cruising the Battlefield)

In episode 9 of Another Time, MacLeod! (16:00-16:51), Robs Wallis (Twitter: @robertmwallis) and Daniel (@rob_a_daniel) are joined by Dr. Chris Cooling (@chriscooling7) to discuss Connor's unfortunate first encounter with The Kurgan (SPOILER: It does not go well for Connor.).

Topics of discussion include whether Highlander is camp and/or postmodern, what type of rock concept album it would be, and whether "Kurgan laughs evilly" is an and appropriate chyron for the film's duration (SPOILER: It is).

Chris, a recent convert to Highlander fandom, also makes a compelling case for Highlander as a queer text...

(12:35-13:19), Robs Wallis (Twitter: @robertmwallis) and Daniel (@rob_a_daniel) are joined by the magnificent Mark & Dr. Elaine Gregson of The Honeymoon Period Podcast (@thehoneymoonpod) to discuss the first appearance of British screen legend Celia Imrie as Connor's would-be girlfriend, Heather. • Episode 6 - Up, Up, Up to Scotland!

AKA Three Men & A Bridge, AKA Peeing Yer Kilt, AKA Man Talk and Very Little Connective Tissue Whatsoever, AKA Come On, Eilean Donan

In episode 6 of Another Time, MacLeod! (10:58-12:47), Robs Wallis (Twitter: @robertmwallis) and Daniel (@rob_a_daniel) are joined once again by the fabulous Ian Bird (@mrcarapace).

Here they discuss the first of the film's many amazing scene transitions, taking us from the parking garage of Madison Square Garden circa 1986 to the highlands of Scotland in the Year of Our Lord 1536. Highlights include Rob W's utter failure to introduce himself, the youthful charm of the male knee, the winning avunicularity of James Cosmo, Highlander's slandering of Kurgan society, false cognates, Birdgate, and the disposability of the female perspective within the film's overarching narrative.

It might boil down to three men crossing a bridge and a couple of neat camera moves, but boy, there's a lot to chew on here.
