  • 26 Seconds: A film on the Horrors of Sex Trafficking Across the World | Kelly Galindo
5-20-19 Answers for the Family Interview with Kelly Galindo
Host: Allen Cardoza and Co-host: Gabriella van Rij

1.2 million children are trafficked every year. Victims are coerced, manipulated and/or kidnapped. Others are forced into it by close associates, relatives, friends, boyfriends, pimps, madams, traffickers, or tragically sometimes even their own parents. While there can be complex cultural and economic motivations at play, the sex trade is predicated on one undeniable reality: Every “26 Seconds” every day around the world, countless girls and boys are bought, sold, and raped by grown men.

Forced labor is a $150 Billion per year industry. The economic benefits of selling sex are irrefutable. Unlike drugs or weapons, a child or woman can be sold over & over again. Often five to ten times per day. This is modern day slavery; Traffickers are the only ones who profit. How long will the screams of victims go unheard? How long will the world stand by as children and womens’ lives are shattered and scarred by sexual and emotional abuse?

“26 Seconds” is a dramatic feature-length documentary about the horrors of sex trafficking across the world. One child every “26 Seconds” is trafficked globally, the majority ending up in the sex trade. It features the heartbreaking stories of children and women from vastly different cultures experiencing horrifically similar traumas. It highlights the active efforts of survivors, other individuals and non-profit organizations to rescue more victims, raise awareness to those in power to affect change, and ultimately put a stop to this horrific, worldwide industry.

The film follows children and women from each of the film’s target countries: Thailand, Cambodia, India, Iraq, Mexico, East Africa and in the United States. The story is told through the survivors’ point of view, with support and additional perspective from expert testimony.

“26 Seconds” is a poignant and unapologetic documentary in its exposure of a grave global dilemma of human trafficking. It will deliver a compelling emotional journey in the hopes of raising worldwide awareness of this urgent issue, and will challenge each of us to stand up for innocent children and women all around the world.

    Guest Host: Gabriella van Rij

Addiction is affecting families more than ever. According to the NIH, “More than 70,200 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2017, including illicit drugs and prescription opioids.” Addiction plagues our communities.

Britten Devereux, CEO of two companies, masters-level clinician and distress tolerance trainer, sees addiction from a different angle, one we can touch and heal. For Britten, it’s not just personal, it’s her professional commitment to inform the modern family on healthy attachment and values-driven connection.

According to Britten, if addiction treatment does not address our screens habits, think twice about the provider. She asks us, “Have you noticed your heart rate or muscle tension change when you focus on screens? Depending on the chosen stimuli – gaming, email, social media, whatever your screen distraction – may not provide the relief you need. Hard to accept when screens to do so much for us.”

Space Before Change launched meaningful access to the behavioral healthcare challenges facing all of us. The membership is much less expensive than outpatient or inpatient treatment but uses the same modalities. Curricula writer and clinical leader, Britten, noticed the gap in services for those in addiction. It shouldn’t be inpatient, outpatient or “live with moral failure & fear.” We love Britten’s determination and creativity. She gives us a simple solution to the addiction of any kind AND to digital clutter. In her words, “This is not about fewer screens or less technology, Space Before Change is about balancing our high tech lives to incorporate mindfulness. It offers an accessible integrated keystone habit into the addiction treatment space called My 42, which involves replacing 21 minutes of screen time with 21 minutes of repair to live a connected, conscious life.”

  • CODEBREAKER: Discover the Password to Unlock the Best Version of You Book and Journal
5-6-19 Answers for the Family Interview with Sandra and Daniel Biskind
Host: Allen Cardoza & Co-Host: Gabriella van Rij

Jack Canfield, Founder of Chicken Soup of the Soul, has so embraced the work of Sandra and Daniel Biskind that after working with them personally, he brought them in to engage with his entire staff, calling the results “truly life-changing” and “magical.” International business leaders, spiritual luminaries, female icons and celebrities sing their praises.

But it’s their extraordinary work as Codebreakers that is serving not only the elite but for every man or woman who is suffering in physical, emotional, psychological or financial pain.

These international bestselling authors, speakers, trainers, and healers have finally committed their full decoding process to paper in their new book CODEBREAKER: Discover the Password to Unlock the Best Version of You, and its perfect companion, The CODEBREAKER Journal. These go straight to the heart of recoding what blocks us from realizing our optimum life.

They ask: “Imagine if we could eradicate the war between the ego mind’s unconscious priorities and the soul’s desire to be whole—to be the best version of who we are?” And indeed, they have done it!

After decades of research and development, the Biskind’s have deciphered the code to living as high-frequency beings, set free from the unconscious programs that derail our success and desires.

They guide readers on how to achieve a PLATIMUM Life, integrating the following elements into their lives effectively and permanently, using specific tools, techniques, deep penetrating questions, meditations and more

  • From Surviving to Thriving – How Mindfulness Saved a Recovering Jerk | Peter Callahan
When Peter, Copper Beech Institute’s Leadership & Engagement Director and founder of Fresh Perspectives, introduces himself in this manner, he’s not joking. He spent much of his youth compensating for his unhappiness by building an armor around himself that left him disconnected and unable to empathize.

“I realized I was so disconnected, but I didn’t know why,” Peter said. “I finally admitted I didn’t like the way I was and that I wanted to change and connect with others.”

It was this desire for connection that launched him on a path of transformation. He’d seen loved ones undergo introspective journeys and change for the better, including his mother through her work with the 12 Steps of Al-Anon, a fellowship of families and friends of alcoholics. This planted the seed for Peter’s own contemplative work, which eventually led him to Copper Beech Institute.

“I learned of Copper Beech when I met Brandon and Susan Nappi through my wife, Mackenzie. My first retreat was with them at the Couples’ Retreat. Brandon and Susan are like family now.”

When asked what he appreciates most about Copper Beech Institute, Peter is quick to point out the authenticity and compassion inherent to the community.

“The people who work and visit Copper Beech practice what they preach,” Peter said. “When you’re here, you’re treated like a whole person, not a number. And because the size is manageable and we’re continuing to blossom, everyone can be a part of the Institute’s growth.”

In addition to his role of furthering Copper Beech’s work, Peter has partaken in the Institute’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course to further deepen his meditation practice and is pursuing MBSR teacher certification.

“I meditate every day now,” he said. “MBSR has especially helped me hear and understand my body’s signals more clearly and take better care of myself.”

For Peter, though, meditation isn’t just about himself – it’s about how he engages with the world.

“It’s great if you can sit on a mat and meditate for hours, but what if someone cuts you off in traffic? I used to have so much road rage. I would scream, flip other drivers off, tailgate them, you name it. After years of daily meditation practice and all I’ve learned at Copper Beech, when I have those urges, I now have the space to notice them, accept them, and choose how I respond to them.”

Instead of living with armor that leaves him feeling alone, Peter is now focused on leading a compassionate and purposeful life. “I just want to create as many positive ripples as I can,” he shared with a smile.

    ABOUT PETER CALAHAN

Peter loves to work with leaders, students, and entrepreneurs and together practice looking inside to discover and act on their values, meaningfully connect with others, and find fulfillment in their work and lives.

Peter holds certifications as a Professional Coach through the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching and the International Coach Federation. He has completed mindfulness teacher trainings through UMass Medical School and Mindful Schools, has a degree in Entrepreneurship and Business Management from the University of Rhode Island, and has managed and worked with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses throughout the country.

Peter has served on the board of the International Coach Federation, is a founding board member of the Entrepreneurial Center of Northwest Connecticut, is past President of the Litchfield Chapter of Business Networking International, and is a Northwest Connecticut 40 Under 40 Award winner. Peter lives in Harwinton with his wife, Mackenzie and is an avid hiker, skier, and reader, and also loves to travel and volunteer throughout his community.

Most contemporary thought on overeating and bingeing focuses on healing and self-love. But people who’ve overcome food addiction and weight issues often report it was more like capturing and caging a rabid dog than learning to love their inner child.

Open the cage even an inch—or show that dog an ounce of fear—and it’ll quickly burst out to shred your healthy eating plans, undoing all your progress in a heartbeat.
