OPENING PRAYER (v. 1-7)
• This is an "A-Z" Sermon. This Psalm is an acrostic of the 22 letter, Hebrew alphabet. Each verse begins with a successive letter in the alphabet.
• This outline is a good suggestion for how you can pray and do your morning devotion.
• What does David pray for? For grace. To learn. For patience.

MEDITATION AND THOUGHT (v. 8-15)
• FORGIVE THAT KID • If you have confessed your sins, God has forgiven you and forgotten your sins.
• David understands that he has not "arrived."
• Teach me to live by faith, teach me not to worry, teach me how great you are.
• Don't rush.
• Attitude of the Heart and the Anticipated Blessings
○ Humility (v. 9) // God will lead and teach you
○ Obedience (v. 10) // Paths of steadfast love and faithfulness
○ Reverence (v. 12,14) // Godly instruction and friendship
• If you are obedient to God's Word, it's not possible for you to walk down an unfavorable road.

• If you fear the Lord, God will instruct you in His ways.
• The word "friendship" can also be translated to "secret counsel."
• The secret counsel needs to align with God's Word.

CLOSING PRAYER (16-22)
• David shares his many problems with the Lord. But he doesn't complain once.
• (v. 18) Do we still ask God to forgive us of our sins?
• Some Christians want to keep their options for sin open.
• (v. 21) These are your life preservers. Integrity and Uprightness.

I. Who is the Shepherd?
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
-John 10:11 (esv)
When you trust in the name of Jesus, you become one of his sheep. The job of a shepherd is to care for his sheep, to guide them, and protect them.
The person who confidently believes, "The Lord is my shepherd" has everything they need. The only "want" they have is their shepherd.

II. You Need Rest.
Our greatest strength can also be our greatest weakness.
"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." Matt 2:27
It is not in our flesh to rest the way God has asked us to. If we do not rest, we will collapse physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Which day of the week is best for you to rest? Monday-Sunday? Take that day and let the shepherd lay you down in green pastures...
Jesus can restore you.
Hebrew word for restore means to "return or turn back."

III. The Narrow Path.
The Lord leads us for his name's sake. These paths will not always be pretty.
If anyone knows about walking through the valley of the shadow of death, it's Jesus.
The purpose of the valley is to get somewhere!
"I'm walking through"
○ Question: What moment in your life caused you to grow closest to God? Was it in the valley (low moment) or on the mountaintop (high moment)?

IV. No Matter Our Circumstances
David may actually still be in the valley.
No matter our circumstances, we can control our attitude by focusing on God first.

LIFE GROUP QUESTIONS:

2) What are some practical ways to restore your soul?
3) How has God comforted you in the valleys?

Where and who do we seek counsel and encouragement when we feel isolated, mistreated, misunderstood, and rejected?

In this passage, David wrestled through his feelings and circumstances by remembering three of God's key characteristics. We can and should hold onto these when we are being challenged to work through feelings, circumstances, adversity, and disappointments.
1) God is holy (v. 3) -- He is perfect and just in everything He does. He never violates His character of holiness. Keep on!
2) God is infinite (v. 19) -- He has strength and resources beyond our own! Keep on!
3) God is faithful (v. 26) -- He always keeps His promises. My hope and trust are in Him and His perfection. Keep on; do not quit!

Do not quit.

We see Jesus clearly in this Psalm. From the cry, cruelty, and clothing, each is fulfilled in the Son of God. The Psalm is all about Jesus! When Jesus died on the cross, He died so ALL could come to Him for salvation, forgiveness, and redemption.
