G’day and welcome to the AntipodeanSF Radio Show Arp’s, dedicated to the Astronomer Halton Arp. And just in case you’re wondering, which you should always do if you’re a true fan of the what if, the name Arp, as well as being the name of a galaxy as well, also refers to a book by Halton Arp that is a collection of the most peculiar mass conglomerations of stars in humankind’s telescopic reach.

Peculiarly enough, isn’t that also a meta description of the stories imagined in that space, around at least one of those stars? Similarly peculiar, and I think I just like that word today, I’m Nuke, your host and editor, and I’m definitely comfortable on my back in the grass looking up at the stars, and that’s where I’m staying for at least the next twenty five minutes or so. On a collision course with the Milky Way, no less, but currently two and a half million light years distant, named after the mythological princess Andromeda since the great galaxy is visible within that constellation. Is there a story in there? I’m sure there is. Andromeda, after all, is the biggest of the big when it comes to the local group, and has at least twice as many stars as the Milky Way. G’day, but not said in a way that can be traced back to drunk ancestors as some might like us to believe, from this Aussie magazine, radio show, and host of same. Hi, I’m Nuke, and this is, as you may have apprehended, the AntipodeanSF Radio Show Ambartsumian’s Knot. What? Well, it’s like this. The Knot is a part of a group known as the guitar, but this is not for playing. It’s a dwarf about 400 million light years distant, dancing in a spray of gravitational forces ripping streams and knots of stars into patterns that we can see.

Here at AntiSF we can see that far, but this episode has no guitars, although it may have some knots of the mind, and streams and sprays of consciousness. Please stick with me for the next half an hour or so for three ripping speculative stories and just a little music to bind them.

G’day. Greetings earthlings. Do you know how to find Alderamin?. Looking at the constellation Cepheus helps. Therein lives a star that’s also designated Alpha Cephei. The star is relatively close to our solar system at only 49 light years. Ah relatively, is the key. Do you really know now far 49 light years is? Do you really know how far one light year is. The distances in this universe are almost beyond imagination. But back to the star. It has the traditional name Alderamin, an Arabic name meaning "the right arm".

And here we are, rain pattering on the roof, Alderamin in action but hidden, glowing somewhere that I cannot see it because it’s behind the curvature of the planet on which we live.

And as for on this side of that planet, It’s no longer winter, warmth is coming, but there is still time for a winter’s tale — and for us to get down on the pharmaceuticals. Story time by the way. And I’m Nuke, your host and editor. Two tales, and some down-under music about to assault your ears.

It’s familiar to most observers in the northern hemisphere as the lower-left star forming the bowl of the Big Dipper, together with Dubhe (upper-right), Merak (lower-right) and Megrez (upper-left). It is a main sequence star not unlike Sol, although somewhat hotter, brighter and larger.
