March 7th was the 20th anniversary of her car accident. She was left with a Traumatic Brain Injury and other injuries. During the recovery process, she was flooded with memories she had suppressed about abusive childhood. She ended up having a nervous breakdown dealing with those memories and the emotional scars the experience left. The conclusion she came to is we all develop strategies to deal with whatever we go through in our lives and at some point, those strategies -- that helped us to survive -- begin to actively hold us back because they no longer serve us or serve where we are now in our lives. Her examples would include things like perfectionism....an avoidant conflict style....to name a couple. Once she came to that realization she was able to begin the process of healing from my emotional wounds and taking control back over her life.
