AP Now Episode 21: Mary Schaeffer with Jim Frazier on Sales and Use Tax Issues

Listen Later

Sales and Use Tax expert, Jim Frazier joins AP Now’s Mary Schaeffer on the AP Now podcast. This time, the topic is issues related to sales and use tax. Jim begins by explaining how he came to the sales and use tax world, starting out as a CPA. He claims he wasn’t very good at that but found he was a good public speaker. (I can attest to the accuracy of that remark). Given the complexities of the issue, there are not a whole lot of people who can talk about the topic in an intelligent and entertaining manner.

He shared an example or two of how bizarre some of the sales tax rules are. And of course, they vary from state to state. He provided a genesis of how the famed Wayfair ruling came about. This ruling came from the US Supreme Court and is changing the way sales tax is handled in virtually every state that charges sales tax. (Five don’t.) He commented that although the Supreme Court urged states to emulate the South Dakota sales tax program, many only picked the more prominent portions related to thresholds, and have not made the other changes. Because of this, he expects the confusion around sales tax will continue for some time.
