Steve Mercatante of taxinformationreporting.com returns to the AP Now podcast to discuss common IRS questions. As unbelievable as it may seem, if you stay with us until the end of the podcast, Steve will have you laughing. After introducing Steve and discussing his Federal and State Filing Guide, Steve launches into a discussion of the myriad of reporting responsibilities all organizations have not only on the Federal level, but at the state and local levels as well.
He talks at some length about the issues raised with the recent Supreme Court decision regarding sales tax for online sellers before moving on to address some frequently asked questions, the most common one revolving around what happens when the IRS issues a new W-9. This seems to happen every few years, if not more frequently.
He then moves on to discuss one of his pet peeves, the misconceptions around proper reporting of payments to hotels. He notes, it is not reportable as most people think it should be. We close with a discussion of some of the more “interesting” questions he’s been asked, be they specialty ones or those he characterizes as “Light-bulb” moments. It’s during this particular discussion that he makes the audience not just smile, but laugh out loud. Now, how often does that happen during a discussion of taxes?
