Apologue Podcast

Nick Harper, Greg and Brent Lee from the Alpacas came on the show to talk about the industry, life as a musician and the joy of song writing. They released the album "the Best is Behind You" in October of 2016 and are presently working on a new album. This band has the feeling of "the Get up Kids" and "Gaslight Anthem" while creating a sound that's unique and fresh. Look for new music and shows happening this year!

Brain Wahlstrom started Gods Of Mount Olympus with an aggressive piano and catchy melodies. A punked out Billy Joel if you will. Brian is an accomplished opera singer as well. He has a broad concept of music and brings all of it to GOMO. The band features Steve Morris (Unwritten Law) and Matt Riddle (No Use for a Name) on guitar and bass respectively. Their new album is out on Bird Attack records and can be sampled and purchased on iTunes and BandCamp now.

Seth Richard is a singer/ song writer and founding member of Layden and the Lion. The band is named after his two kids and is his main form of income. This means that he has to be on tour for over 200 days of the year to support his family. It's a hard life and I have so much respect for Seth and his art. I caught up with Seth while he was travelling north to Montreal to start a Canadian tour for three weeks. Having to cancel some of his shows because of a death of someone very close to him, Seth was a reflective conversation and it went in some interesting spots. Thanks for the talk!

Rod Slaughter is the member of Winnipeg's Duotang. a two piece rock outfit that's been around for several years. I am proud to say that Rod's first solo show was in my basement when I lived in Winnipeg in the early nineties. Duotang play occasionally and tour never. They're a great band to see live and have great sounding records! Good chat with an old buddy!

Andreas Tompros moved down south many years ago from Canada to LA. While he was down there, he started a company and called it "Casting Frontier". This company was an online casting solution to solve a problem that all agencies have. How to speed up casting calls and push it into the modern era. The company he co-founded was perfect solution that was years ahead of its competitors. Andreas (Dre) lived and played in bands in the Toronto area for years before that and was the karaoke DJ at my wedding!  Dre insisted that this episode take place in his bath tub, so rub a dub dub here we go!

JP Wasson is the founding member of Toronto's own "Snowdogs" and has been playing music in Canada's punk scene for a very long time. JP has put a band together with his two sons and has released two albums in as many years. When the band first started, Caden Jax (drums) was 13 and Jared Dean (Bass) 15. They went back into the studio with Ian Blurton to record their 2nd album "Manifesto" which has the spirit of 77 and the teenage angst that only kids and kids at heart can create. The new album is out on February 24th on Rock Bottom Records and they're playing shows most of March to support the new release.

Tony Gonzalez is the other half of Barren Womb, a duo based out of Norway. Barren Wombs sound has a sound akin to Big Black, Shellac and other Steve Albini recordings. As a two piece, there's lots of room for sound to find its way to the top of the mix. This album oozes room tone and I learnt later in the conversation that the studio they recorded in was actually quite small. An amazing album and a great conversation. Their new album "Old Money/ New Lows is out on February 16th on Spartan records and really worth a listen.

Welcome to episode #170. Kami Van Halst is the lead singer and founding member of the band aptly named VAN HALST. The band started as a solo project with Kami exploring socially expressive lyrics packed in a metal wrapper. The first album "World of Make Believe" gained them some awards and chart spots but most importantly caught the attention of producer Arnold Lanni. They are presently in the studio together making an album that hopefully will have a release date of June 2018. Looking forward to it, enjoy the conversation.

'World of Make Believe' is available on iTunes and Bandcamp.
