Desde la disolución soviética y la independencia de Ucrania en 1991, el este y el sur del país es mayoritariamente prorruso mientras que el oeste y el norte es prooccidental. En el este se habla ruso, la identidad se vincula a la industria, a las ciudades, a la Iglesia Ortodoxa rusa. Por el contrario, en el oeste predomina el idioma ucraniano y la identidad está ligada a la agricultura y al campo.
