If you live in a bigger city, especially in the United States chances are a local internet service provider (or ISP) has tried to sell you "blazing fast fiber gigabit internet". Yes, 1,000 Mbps or 1 Gbps is really fast and it sounds really cool. But, is it worth the high price? Let's take a look.

Shortfalls of Cable

For most people, your internet comes from a local cable provider like Spectrum or Comcast. Because there is not enough bandwidth or space in the physical cable for TV, phone, and internet to pass through the download speeds, like when opening this post or watching Netflix, has to be capped at around 500 Mbps. Since most consumers are downloading more than uploading, like posting a picture on Facebook, uploads speeds typically capped at 20 Mbps or less. If your a DSL or satellite customer your connection suffers from the same issues.

Fiber

Before getting to gigabit internet let's talk about the core technology which as allowed this fast speed to come to your front door.

Currently, the only way to get gigabit internet to your house is by using a fiber-optic network. At the time of writing this, fiber-optic networks are being rolled out to larger cities by big telecom companies. Fiber is a glass wire insulated by plastic that uses light to move data back and forth. Fiber is great because it has more bandwidth, or has space to send more data back and forth than a copper cable wire.

Fiber cables are used as the backbone of the World Wide Web. An example being the fiber optic cables that wrap around the oceans connecting whole continents and islands to the internet.

Through fiber, telecom companies can offer higher data speeds, such as gigabit, without the rest of the network suffering.

However, there is a drawback. Fiber is incredibly expensive. Rolling out fiber entails running a 100% fiber connection from the internet service providers hub all the way into your house. That's a lot of fiber cable which is not cheap. Because it's not affordable for the internet company they, most likely, are not going to make it affordable for you, at least at first.

What Can You Expect with 1000 Mbps Up and Down?

This chart shows how long it would take to download a 3GB movie and a 1GB file.

With a gigabit connection, you can download a movie that's 3GB in size in about 24 seconds which is about 3.5 minutes faster than with a 100Mbps connection. A 1 GB file can download in about 8 seconds which would take a little more than a minute with a 100 Mbps connection. Then you should be able to upload those same files and get roughly the same times. That's a huge time saver.

But, note that the download times listed in the chart are theoretical. It does not take into account real-world variables. Essentially you will never actually reach those times.

Which now gets us to our original question: is gigabit fiber internet worth it?

The short answer is no. Let me explain.

If you have the option for gigabit internet in your neighborhood your internet provider may have played it up a bit with the advertising. Let's talk about my two issues with fiber.

1. False Internet Speeds

As of now when you subscribe to gigabit internet chances are you won't actually get that speed...

Every app has different reasons for wanting to know your location. Your weather app may want to give you updates based on your current location and, your camera wants to tag each photo you take with the location it was taken. There are some apps you may approve of using your location, and others you don't. So here is a rundown of managing your location services on iPhone and iPad.

What are Location Services?

Apple is big on personal privacy. Apple's privacy settings give you the power to decide what parts of your device an app can access. Lately, Apple has cracked down on how apps get your location by closing multiple loopholes. Now the only way an app can see your location is by you giving it explicit permission. These are Location Services.

What Apps Need Your Location?

Which apps you give permission to see your location is up to you. But, here are some things to consider when making that decision.

First, why? Why does this app need your location? Weather and news apps may give you updates based on your current location. Your Google search may want to help find the local restaurant you're looking for. But, why does a game need your location? It probably doesn't. Why do social media apps like Facebook and Instagram need your location? In most cases, they don't.

Second, how much privacy do you want to give up for the sake of convenience? It might be quicker for that app to automatically get your location, however, in most apps, you can type it in manually.

Each app is supposed to have a privacy policy where they lay out what they do with your data and why they need it. In that privacy policy, there should be something how it uses your location information. If you can't find the privacy policy quickly within the app, you can find a link to it under the Information group of its App Store listing.

So, who do you feel comfortable with being able to see your location?

Setting Location Preferences

When you open an app for the first time you're going to get many popups asking for your permission to use different parts of your device.

One of those popups may be asking your permission to use your location. In bold at the top of the popup, it will say, for example, Allow "Target" to use your location?

Next, is a short description of why the app wants to use your location. For example, "Target will use your location to find nearby stores, items and deals, and to know when you've arrived for Drive up orders"

Under that, you will see a map showing your current location. On the top left of the map, there's is an icon of an arrow with a description of "Precise". By default, if you give the app permission to see your current location, that app can see your precise location down to the street. If you turn off "Precise" that app can only see a wide radius of your current location. For example, if you're looking for a local Target you may not want to give your exact current location. Instead, you can turn precise off, then Target will find locations based on your general current location without seeing exactly where you're at.

Below the map, you have three options. The top option, "Allow Once", is great for apps that you want to give one-time access to your location. Next time that app needs your location you will get this same popup. "Allow While Using App" will give your current location to that app when it's needed without prompting the user first. Lastly, you can choose "Don't Allow" which will stop the app from ever seeing your location.

So you're ready to ditch your cable subscription and go all-in with online streaming. Are you trying to get your cable bill lower? Tired of commercials? Don't watch TV live anymore? Whatever the reason here are some online streaming options and what you need to get started.

Internet

First, you're going to want a solid internet connection. Look into getting speeds around 100Mbps or higher. The more people you have streaming the higher speed you will want to get. For better stability and performance make sure you have a good WIFI connection or even better plug your device directly into the internet using an ethernet cable. Call around see your options, maybe you can even bundle it with another service such as your mobile phone.

What to Watch With

So what are you going to watch on? You need to have some way to get your streaming apps to the big screen. If you have a newer TV you can use the built-in smart TV capabilities which should work just fine. Play around with it and see what you think. But, if that doesn't work for you there are plenty of other options.

Fire Stick

Amazon Fire Stick starts at $30 and is a great option if you're an Amazon Prime subscriber. It has A-L-E-X-A built-in for voice commands and integrates with all of your Prime services. You have different form factors to choose from like a small Fire Stick to a large Fire Cube.

If you're heavily invested in the Google ecosystem check out Chromecast with Google TV starting at $50. Google TV and its new clean user interface is made for your TV and gives you the same features as any other TV streaming box. They also have the standard Chromecast which is cheaper starting at $35, however you have use another device like your iPad to send your video to the TV.

AppleTV is Apple's streaming box. On the pricer side starting at $149, it's powered by the same chips as in your iPhone. It has a huge focus on bringing mobile games to the big screen while the rest are more streaming specific. It also features AirPlay so you can throw whatever you have on your iPhone, iPad, and even your Mac to the big screen.

Once a staple of the internet Adobe Flash expanded the features of the early web. Today, it no longer holds that power and has been on the decline and replaced by modern technologies.

First, let's start with a brief history all the way back in the late 90s. The internet is this new thing that connects the world. In those early days, it didn't do much but display text. To combat this software like plug-ins came around to run alongside the internet and expand its features.

The biggest of these was Adobe Flash Player. Flash took over the internet. YouTube and other online videos player, online audio players, nearly any online game, graphics, and almost anything else that you interacted with on the internet was powered by Flash. But now Adobe Flash's days are numbered.

On December 31, 2020, Adobe Flash will be dead.

In July 2017, Adobe and its partners Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Mozilla (makers of the Firefox browser) made a joint announcement that it's time to move past Adobe Flash.

When the new year rolls around apps powered by Flash will cease to work. Microsoft has announced that they will uninstall the plugin from Windows computers through a Windows Update. Google Chrome has Flash deactivated by default, for now, you can re-enable it when needed, with Flash being completely removed by the end of 2020. And in Safari, the browser asks for your permission before running Flash content. The feature will be completely removed from Safari with the release of Safari 14 and macOS Big Sur.

So what happened to Flash? One of the big issues was the many security and privacy vulnerabilities. Time and time again vulnerabilities appeared that Adobe knew about, yet they still dragged their feet when came to releasing fixes.

There were many outspoken critics of the software like Steve Jobs who wrote an open letter titled "Thoughts on Flash" where he shared a security research company's findings that stated Flash as "having one of the worst security records in 2009". He goes on to say that "Flash is the number one reason Macs crash." His list of gripes included terrible performance, terrible reliability, terrible security, terrible battery life, and the lack of touch support.

However, at the end of the day, there are two main reasons Adobe Flash has met its demise.

One, the lack of touch support. In 2020 we think everything is optimized for touch screen mobile devices, but not Flash applications.

Second, the open web. HTML is an open and free to use programming language for making websites. Running alongside HTML is CSS for design and JavaScript for user interaction, both of which are also open and free to use standards. They're fast, reliable, touch-friendly, and great on battery. Any company can use and contribute to the development of these projects instead of it being controlled by one person or company like Flash was. Because of this,

Spoofing and Phishing Email

Before getting into a specific example let's start with the basics. When someone spoofs an email they are creating a fake unofficial email and attaching an official name to that email. In the body of the email is typically a phishing attack. A phishing attack is when someone tricks you into revealing personal information like a username and password.

That may sound confusing so lets look at an example.

Here is an email from iCloud giving me a ticket number and telling me that my Apple ID has been locked. Is this email really from Apple? No. To prove this let's examine the email in Apple's native Mail app.

When I hover over the sender's name "iCloud" and click the down arrow a menu will appear where you can see "iCloud"'s email address. This email came from [email protected]. You can tell where this email came from by looking to the right of the at symbol (@). In this case, this email is coming from cloud9.ide.com which is obviously not Apple.com. Therefore it's not an official email from Apple.

However, if we skip over the fact that this email didn't come from Apple lets look at the "Verify Account" button at the bottom of the email. Clicking the button will open the link in your default browser. The site address is safe-urls.link.zygwc.com/?BO2PX7Z7. If this site worked it would most likely ask for me to enter my Apple ID, which I would never do. If we look at the domain zygwc.com we can once again tell that we are not on Apple.com. Once again proving that not only is this email spoofing Apple but it is also an attempted phishing attack to get my AppleID.

On the topic of emails from "Apple", Apple will never send you an email with a Microsoft Word document attached. In general, never open Word documents from unknown senders. That document could hold malicious code that could give an attacker access to your computer.

Next Level

Let's see what happens when attackers take it to the next level.

This is an invite to a PDF document via Microsoft Sharepoint. Sharepoint is Microsoft's online collaboration software for business. Believe it or not, this is a completely authentic Microsoft Sharepoint email. The email, which I have hidden for privacy reasons, is a real email that belongs to the sender and has not been spoofed. When I click "Open" the link opens in by default browser taking me to a PDF shared via Microsoft Sharepoint. Once again everything here is authentic. What's in the PDF is where things get fishy.

The PDF tells me that I have to click the "CONTINUE TO FILE" link to access the "files". After clicking the link I get a warning from my browser telling me I'm entering an unsafe site, which is a big red flag. But to see where it goes I'm going to ignore the warning. However, I do not recommend you do the same. If your browser tells you your entering an unsafe site TURN AWAY.

Apple has announced Apple One at its “Time Flies” Special Event last Tuesday. It’s a bundle of their services into one monthly or yearly subscription and comes in three tiers, and will be released by the end of the year. But, is it worth it?

Apple's Services

First, let’s do a rundown of Apple’s services.

Apple Music$10/mo (Personal), $15/mo (Family)Apple Music is their music streaming service. For $10 a month you and stream all the music you want from a wide variety of artists, create playlists, explore new music, and expand your library.

Apple TV+$5/moApple TV+ is Apple’s video streaming service featuring original award-winning content from Apple’s studios for $5 a month.

Apple Arcade$5/moApple Arcade, Apple’s gaming subscription service has around 100 games, mostly children’s games, that are all ad-free have no in-app purchases. It costs $5 a month.

Apple One Plans

Now that we have that out of the way let’s take a look at the Apple One tiers.

Apple One Individual costs $15 a month and includes Music, Arcade, TV+, and 50GB of iCloud storage.

Apple One Family costs $20 a month and includes the same services as the individual plan with iCloud storage being increased to 200GB. You can also share the benefits with up to six people.

Apple One Premier costs $30 a month and includes all of Apple’s services including Music, Arcade, TV+, 2TB of iCloud storage, News+, and Fitness+. With the ability to share all of these services with up to six people.

My Complaints

I do have some complaints. Apple why include TV+ and Arcade in every bundle? Both of these services are hard sells.

Starting with AppleTV+. The service may have award-wining content, but there isn’t a lot. There’s about enough content to spend $5 to subscribe for a month and stream the whole catalog. Or you can just buy a new Apple product and get a year of TV+ free.

Second, Apple Arcade? No thanks. Get access to around 100 children’s mobile games. Games you would expect to be free on the App Store supported by ads and in-app purchases, not a monthly subscription. It would make more sense if included some console-level gam...

Price

First, let's start with the price. At the moment you can get a one-time purchase of Office for $150 for one computer. With a subscription, it's $7 a month for personal or $10 a month for a family plan with up to 6 members.

Now let's analyze these prices. If Microsoft continues releasing new versions of Office at the same rate, around every three years or so. If you take that $150 and divide it by 36 (for 36 months over those 3 years) you get about $4 a month that is if you plan on always purchasing the latest version of Office when released. That's $3 less than just purchasing the personal subscription.

What comes with a One-Time Purchase of Office?

With a one time purchase of Office, you get Word, PowerPoint, and Excel on one PC or Mac. That's all you get. If you're looking to install Office on more than one computer or have multiple users it may make more sense to get a subscription.

What comes with Microsoft 365 Subscription?

Microsoft rebranded Office 365 into Microsoft 365 in an attempt to highlight other features that are now bundled with the subscription. There are two subscription options, a family plan, and a personal plan. With the personal plan, you can install Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Access, and Publisher on up to 5 Mac, PCs, iOS devices, and Android devices. With a family plan, you can share your Microsft 365 benefits with up to 6 people. This means that each person can install Office on up to 5 of their desktop and mobile devices.

The next biggest thing that comes with the subscription is 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage per person. 1TB is enough to back up your whole computer to the cloud so you don't lose any data in the case of a computer failure. Alternatively, you can use OneDrive storage to back up your whole photo library so you don't lose a single memory. With your data stored in the cloud, you can access it from any other device around the world.

As a Microsoft 365 subscriber your not stuck with the current version of Office. When the next big version is released just wait for the update to come to your computer. No need to dish out more money for the next release.

Lastly, and this is a big one, free phone or chat support from Microsoft. If you are someone who knows they may be running into problems whether, with account management or using other Office products, this may be appealing.

Those are the highlights of what comes with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Some other side notes include: "AI-powered creative tools" where your computer can help you make design suggestions to your documents. You get a generous 60 Skype minutes so you can call mobile phones and landlines. "Special partner offers" which gives you free trials to Adobe and some other "partners" (nothing big here).

If you're looking to purchase Office you can choose a one-time purchase or a subscription. Personally, I would go with the subscription where I don't have to worry about updates, I can install on all of my devices, and the cloud storage opens many possibilities for backing ...

Specs Rundown

So this is a 27 inch Dell Ultrasharp monitor, model number U2719D. It has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz. The fast response time of 8 ms is set by default, or you can decrease down to 5ms through the monitor’s controls. It’s an LED-backlit monitor so it can get pretty bright but not as dark so there will still be some gray haze in darker areas. It supports 16 million colors and is 99.9% o the sRGB color scale and is factory color calibrated.

So let’s put that into simpler terms. The QHD resolution is a nice little spot between Full HD(or 1080p) and Full 4K. With this monitor look at getting super vibrant high-quality images.

It has super small bezels along all four edges which I love, and it’s super thin so you don’t have to worry about it towering over your desk. The bundled monitor stand is simple to put together, no tools necessary. It can pivot clockwise and counterclockwise 90^o, swivel 40^o in both directions, tilt up and down, and is even hight adjustable. However, if you don’t like the stand that is included you can always pick out your own 100x100 VESA stand or wall mount. Just keep in mind that the mounting holes are housed in the cavity covered by the included monitor stand.

Next, let’s look at the ports in the back. You have the standard power connecter that you find on most other monitors and computers. Then there is an HDMI port which is most likely the port you will use since it is found on most modern displays and TVs along with most PCs. Then you have two DisplayPort connections. DisplayPort is an HDMI competitor in the PC market and is a higher-end cable standard. The first DisplayPort connection is an input, so you plug your computer into this port. The next DisplayPort connection is for output or dazy chaining to another monitor. This means you can plug your computer into one monitor then plug the monitor into another for, affectively, three monitors, however, your computer does need to support Multi-Stream Transport or MST for this to work. DisplayPort and HDMI both carry audio in addition to video.

When you connect your monitor to the computer through one of these ports the monitor will become your computer’s speaker. Since this monitor doesn’t have built-in speakers you can use the 3.5mm headphone jack to plug in your own pair of speakers, or you can get one of Dell’s sounders. You also have the option to change your audio output speakers in your computer’s settings. Up next we get to the USB ports. The first is a USB Type B version 3.0 of which one side goes into the back of the monitor while the other ends on your computer. This one cable connects the other four USB Type-A version 3.0 ports to your computer. You can find two in the back and another two along the left side. You will notice that one of the USB ports on the side of the monitor has a battery indicator next to the USB symbol because you can use this port to charge another device like your iPhone.

My final thoughts on this monitor: it’s overkill for most people. If you come to me and ask me to recommend a monitor to your I’m going to say look at something in the $100 dollar price range with Full HD. Lots of lower end PCs may even struggle to output to the full potential of this monitor. And for most people, the color accuracy doesn’t really matter. The USB dock built into the screen is a cool addition but is it necessary if you can get a monitor at a lower cost without all of that. However, for creatives or people with more powerful computers and a budget for a $300 monitor go for it you have nothing to lose.

Our lives are quickly moving in the mobile direction. Everything that used to be managed on your iMac can now be done on your iPhone. Have you ever thought what would happen if you lost your phone, or worse, broke it beyond repair? Think of what you would lose, all your photos, contacts, apps, and more. That's why you should always back up your data.

When backing up your data you're creating another copy of your device. If you somehow lose your device you have nothing to fear because another copy is safely held in a different location.

Previously you would use your desktop or laptop with iTunes (may it rest in peace) to back up your phone. If something would happen to your phone, you can buy a new one, plug it into your computer, open iTunes, and restore from your previous backup. However, if you no longer have a computer you need somewhere else to keep a second copy of your data.

If you're looking for a second-place to store all of your data, look no further than your iCloud account. iCloud is Apple's cloud suite that can sync your Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Safari bookmarks, Notes, usernames, and passwords with iCloud Keychain, and track your Apple products with Find My. iCloud is a great place to start when looking to sync and back up your data.

Finding Your Calendars, Notes, Contacts, and Reminders

However, iCloud is not the only place you can save your data. If you have added any other email accounts there's a chance that some of your information may be saved on those accounts. First, you need to know where your information is saved.

In Account settings I have Yahoo enabled for Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Notes. Do I have anything saved to my Yahoo account?

If you open Settings then Accounts and Passwords you can see all of the email accounts that you have set up on your iPhone. Under each account, you can see which services are enabled. If you know which account is syncing your contacts, calendars, etc. then disable the other accounts that have those services enabled. For instance, since I use my iCloud account to sync my contacts and calendars, I am going to disable those services from Yahoo. It would be even better if you configure this when you originally add the account to your phone.

If you know which account is syncing your contacts, calendars, notes, and reminders you can skip to the next part getting some ideas of how to back up your photos. If not keep reading to learn how to find which account is doing the work.

In Calendar I see two active calendars in my Yahoo account. However, neither have any calendar dates added to them.

Start by opening the Calendar app then clicking "Calendars" at the bottom. Scroll through the list and see which accounts are active and which calendars are linked to them. In the top left of each section is the name of the account such as iCloud or Gmail. Look at the calendars you have set up under each account. Do you have an account enabled with no calendars or events? If so go to Settings, then go to Accounts and passwords. Select the account of which you want the calendar disabled. Then toggle the calendar off. Now let's move on to the next!

I open Notes and see Yahoo is not a source, so I move on to the next.

Open the Notes app then clicking the back button to go to your folders. Scroll through the list and see which accounts are active. In the top left of each section is the name of the account such as iCloud or Yahoo. Do you have an account enabled with no notes saved? If so go back into Accounts and Passwords in Settings...

If you have purchased any new Mac or iPad Pro since 2016 or some Windows PC's then you probably have one or more USB-C ports. This oval connector that can be used to give your computer both power and data, it's the port that can do it all. Gone are the days of having any other ports, other than USB-C, on your computer.

Problems With USB-C Adapters

It's nice to have just the one port but it also means you will need an adapter if you want to connect to a TV, get a wired internet connection, read the SD card from your camera, and for all the USB-A accessories you have like external backup drive, or wired keyboards and mice. If you add up the price of all theses adapters needed can get pretty expensive.

Then if you have something like a standard MacBook which only has one USB-C port there is no way you can use more than one adapter at the same time. Forget trying to charge your notebook while you have a thumb drive plugged in.

Lastly, if you have a laptop with a USB-C port and you want to keep your set up mobile, you don't want to carry around all of these dongles just in case you may need one.

The Alternative: USB-C Hub

Having to carry around multiple adapters, preparing for anything you may run into, is not the ideal solution. So why not get one adapter that can do it all, a USB-C Hub. It will only take one USB-C port on your device, which is great if you only have one, and it can do everything you need.
