  • E70. Build Me Up Buttercup: How to Build Your Confidence

How do you quickly increase your confidence? Because really, more often, confidence is not inherent but rather created. Increasing your confidence will be the beginning of improving many aspects of your life.

In this episode, April shares five things you can do to quickly build your confidence. You'll be surprised by some of these simple and easily overlooked tips that can tremendously improve both your professional and personal life.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • [1:49] Tell yourself a better Story. Always keep in mind that it's not the events of your life that matter most but the stories you tell yourself about the events in your lives. You have a choice whether to reach for a positive or negative story. Advice: Stop looking for evidence to support a negative narrative but instead a positive one that makes you feel confident!
    • [4:03] Affirmations. These are based on science and teach your brain a new different way to think. Learn to pick empowering affirmations; at least five positive ones that even out that negative one you might have let slide.
    • [6:45] Manage your posture/ state. According to a Power Posing study, to manage your body language, you need to stand with your shoulders held back and your head held high. Remember that how you hold your body, does have an impact on how you think and a commanding powerful stance will make you feel powerful.
    • [9:31] Review your Atta-Boy folder. What are some of your achievements, accomplishments, wins that make you feel amazing- confident? What have you stored in your Atta-Boy folder that you review to make you feel confident? It is important to have a private treasure chest either on your phone or laptop to pull from when you need a confidence boost.
    • [11:47] Review your badass List. The crazy things you have overcome in your life, what are they? Reminding yourself of the badass that you are, will give you the power to press on at any moment's notice.

  • E69. First Comes Ridicule; When They Don't See Your Vision

You will be celebrated when you become successful.

    But not one. Second. Before.

People will not support you when you do something that does not fit into their image of you or the role, they believe you should be playing. You will be criticized, met with concern, and ridiculed.

The people closest to us will be the first ones to say it's impossible. These words stop your progression and are hurting. Remember that no matter how good or noble your idea is, it won't lack ridicule at some level. I did things out of the norm and they were often met with ridicule.

Your goal should be to focus on your purpose and press on without other people's approval. Many successful people I've talked to say they didn't share their ideas because there were chances of being ridiculed.

Your ridicule now will be where you draw strength tomorrow when you face a similar problem. Join me in this episode as we talk about success and ridicule!

  • E67. 3 Steps to Stop Giving Power to an Old Hurt

"Why am I still retelling this old story of how that person wronged me?"

When we retell an old story, an old pain, we give energy to it and form a stronger connection to it. Retelling that story makes it more important, more significant. Don't let that story or person get Air Time. Like a fire that needs oxygen to burn, stop giving it oxygen. To become the best version of you, you must move past the problems, current or past.

Vow to stop retelling that story over the potato salad at the BBQ. Be in solution mode. 80% of your time goes to the solution (if there is one) and 20% to the problem. Your old business partner that took more than his fair share in that deal? The job you didn't get? Do something about it, or stop thinking about it. Stop telling that damn story at BBQs! Don't let it occupy your valuable mental real estate! Teaching yourself where to put your focus and energy will pay you massive dividends. Where are you retelling an old story that doesn't serve you? Reliving a past hurt and reconnecting to it each time? Who is getting Air Time in our minds, that doesn't deserve it? Here are 3 Steps to tackle it: 1st: Identify it. The person, the story, the situation. You retell it, you get upset, you get angry, if this storyโ€”makes you wanna punch someone in the face, then you found it! 2nd: Determine if something needs to be done about it? Have you wronged someone you need to right? Is there a lesson you need to learn? 3rd: Stop retelling the story (at the BBQ or in your mind) and move forward. When facing these situations ask yourself- Can I change it? Can I do something about it? If notโ€”then move forward. Focus on your next steps and the solutions that lay ahead, not behind you.

  • E66. Pivot Point: We Are In An Inflection Point

Sometimes in life we come to a major crossroads. And sometimes you can blow right through that crossroads and not even know it's there...until it's in your rear view mirror. So today we ask - is right now one of those times for you?

In this episode we talk about inflection points or what we refer to as pivot pointsโ€”those moments where you have an opportunity to choose differently and alter course. Many times we're forced into this moment through radical change or tragedy... April shares her own story as well as one of her clients, who went through a really dark time but emerged from the fog and was able to start his own business; something he might not have achieved without seeing and seizing that moment. At the end of this podcast, April encourages everyone to reflect on our past inflection points and the decisions we made in those times; how understanding your past decisions will give you power and purpose in the next one.
