A number of gatherings take place on Canada Day to honour residential school survivors and those who never made it home from the schools: in Winnipeg, where a very active day's events include a pair of statues of British monarchs pulled from their pedestals; a gathering of singers, drummers and dancers in Prince Rupert, B.C.; and hundreds of people assembling in downtown Yellowknife, N.W.T. Amidst 49-degree temperatures, residents of the Lytton First Nation flee their homes after much of the nearby village of Lytton B.C. goes up in flames.
