What does it take to create an independent comic book from the ground up?

On this episode of Talkin' Comics Podcast, AJ Reimann sits down with actor, writer and comic book creator Donal Thoms-Cappello, creator of Powerscape, to talk about the journey from an idea that began years ago to a fully realized independent comic.

Powerscape is set in a future where humanity has rebuilt itself after catastrophic environmental collapse. A mysterious energy called CORE keeps cities alive, but that energy must be replenished. The solution? Cities compete in combat-based sporting events, with the outcome determining who receives the energy needed to survive.

Donal explains where the idea came from, how his background in acting and theater influenced his approach to comics, and how he eventually teamed up with artist Stefan Toshev.

We also get into one of the most important parts of making comics: collaboration.

Donal and AJ compare their own experiences working with artists and discuss why giving artists room to bring their own ideas to the page can make a comic much better than either creator could have imagined alone.

Donal is currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign for the Powerscape Volume One trade paperback, with the campaign expected to launch around mid-October according to the conversation.

And yes... AJ absolutely wants everyone to hit that Notify Me on Launch button.

This is another conversation about what makes independent comics so exciting: creators taking an idea, finding collaborators, building something together, and getting it into readers' hands.

Welcome to Talkin' Comics Podcast — your weekly comic book hangout for comic hauls, creator conversations, trivia, games, and everything we love about comics.

150 episodes ago, we started a little comic book podcast.

Since then, we've talked comics, met creators, played games, shared our collections, created The Chronicles of Panel Pete, traveled to conventions, and had a whole lot of fun along the way.

Now, we're 150 episodes in...

Our mission?

To boldly go where no Talkin' Comics Podcast has gone before.

And we're just getting started. 🖖📚🚀

Episode 150 is here.

AJ and Annakhan are back for another weekly comic book hangout, and this one has a little bit of everything!

We kick things off with our latest comic book haul, including Zorro, Supergirl, Doctor Strange, The Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger, Batman, and a Thor-related pickup AJ needed to continue his reading journey. AJ also talks about catching up on the classic Walt Simonson Thor run and the current Thor stories.

We also talk about what we've been reading, including Sailor Moon and Thor, plus the games and shows we've been enjoying.

And because September 8 marks the anniversary of the original Star Trek premiere, we're celebrating with a Star Trek-themed trivia game and This or That! 🖖

We also look ahead to several upcoming convention appearances, including Comic and Toy Exchange in Raleigh, the Nashville Comic Arts Festival, and Nerdfest in Rock Hill.

Plus, Halloween season has officially arrived! 🎃

This is what Talkin' Comics Podcast is all about: comics, fandom, games, family, conventions, creativity, and having a whole lot of fun along the way.

What does it really take to build a comic convention from the ground up?

On this episode of Talkin' Comics, AJ sits down with Derek of Nerf Herder Comics and Tim of Chasing Collectibles to talk about the story behind Nerdfest, the comic convention they created in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Derek and Tim share how they went from being comic collectors and vendors to creating their own convention, what they learned from their first shows, how Nerdfest has grown, and why getting the word out means more than just posting online.

From Facebook and Instagram to TikTok, comic shops, colleges, libraries and good old-fashioned “boots on the ground” promotion, they explain how they worked to build an audience and create a convention that brings together comic book fans, collectors, vendors, cosplayers and creators.

And there's a big announcement!

Rory Travis, who played the Red Ranger in Power Rangers Beast Morphers, is announced as a special guest for Nerdfest on October 10.

AJ also talks about his own journey with Annakhan, their comic book The Chronicles of Panel Pete, their experience selling at conventions, and why comic conventions have become such an important part of their creative journey.

Guest: Tim and Derrick from NerdFest @nerdfest2025

What does it really take to create, publish, and sell an indie comic book?

On this episode of Talkin' Comics, AJ Reimann sits down with Jesse of Dinosaur Comics and Joe Soliz of Child's Play Comics for a wide-ranging conversation about the realities of making independent comics.

Joe talks about creating How to Hunt a Hero, Malia Mayhem, and Fanny, while Jesse shares the story behind Jankla, Teen Strike, Dinosaur Planet, and his journey from more than 25 years in the video game industry into comics.

The conversation covers:

How indie comic creators get started

Turning ideas into actual comic books

Kickstarter comics and crowdfunding

Selling comics at comic conventions

How to price independent comics

Why $5 comics can be a powerful entry point

Creating issue zero books

Making comics for kids and teens

Manga-sized comics and compact editions

The growing indie comics scene

Comic conventions, schools, and libraries

Writing, art, character design, and storytelling

How a video-game career can lead into comics

Favorite comics and characters

The challenges of marketing independent comics

Joe explains how their short issue-zero format grew into an affordable way for readers to discover their books, while Jesse discusses how his comics have performed at conventions and how he's thinking about future editions.

We also get into the importance of making comics accessible to younger readers, including all-ages books, activity books, manga formats, and school/library events.

If you're a comic book fan, aspiring comic creator, indie publisher, Kickstarter creator, artist, writer, or convention-goer, there's a lot here for you.

What happens when you combine horror, manga, teenage drama, demons and the experience of a veteran video game writer?

In this episode of Talkin' Comics, AJ Reimann sits down with writer Adam Tierney to talk about his new graphic novel 13 Demons Dead, his journey from video games into comics, and the incredible projects he's worked on along the way.

Adam has spent more than two decades working in video games, including projects involving X-Men, Batman, Justice League, River City Girls and Yars Rising. Now he's bringing that experience to comics with 13 Demons Dead, a horror graphic novel about 14-year-old Everly “Ev” Espada, who discovers that she has become the latest demon hunter in a 2,000-year-old battle.

We talk about what inspired 13 Demons Dead, the challenges of creating a 250+ page graphic novel over several years, working with artist Saspy, and why Adam wanted to combine genuine horror with humor, heart, school drama and manga-inspired storytelling.

Adam also takes us behind the scenes of his work on Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theatre: Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, his experiences writing Batman and X-Men video games, working with legendary creators, and how networking at conventions can open unexpected doors.

Plus, we talk about comic shops, indie comics, conventions, favorite characters, current comics, and the dream of getting to work with the characters and creators who inspired you.

If you're a fan of horror comics, manga, graphic novels, Godzilla, Batman, X-Men, video games or indie comic creators, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
