Arun Sinha from Opto 22 discusses digital transformation with Craig Resnick of ARC Advisory Group at the ARC Industry Forum 2019 in Orlando Florida.

With intelligence at the edge being a key component to digital transformation and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Opto 22 offers the groov EPIC, an Edge Programmable Industrial Controller. groov EPIC is an edge-of-network automation and IIoT platform that provides connection to field devices and sensors, traditional industrial programmable control, edge data processing, an on-board mobile-ready HMI and IT-friendly communications for software and cloud connectivity.

Opto 22’s key initiative in 2019 for the groov EPIC platform is to provide as many programming options as possible.. The initial release included Opto 22’s PAC Control programming software, Node-RED, Ignition Edge as well Secure Shell Access. This is now further improved by including an option for IEC 611131-3 programming. There is still a need for traditional programming languages like Ladder Diagram for many users.

The issue of cybersecurity continues to increase at all levels in industrial automation. With the new groov EPIC, cybersecurity was designed in from the ground up. This includes a secure Linux operating system that only accepts firmware and packages that are cryptographically signed by Opto 22, dual independent Ethernet ports, authenticated access over secure encrypted connections, user account management with no default admin credentials, outbound device-originated data communication methods, a built-in configurable firewall, support for SSL certificates and integrated VPN support.

One of the most significant disruptive technologies finding its way to the plant floor is the adoption of new data communication models. These are publish/subscribe methods for moving data easily, securely, and efficiently from the plant floor to applications that need the data. Opto 22 has enabled the groov EPIC to support the MQTT protocol, with Sparkplug. These IIoT applications due to their publish/subscribe architecture, with a central source called a broker, move the data.

With digital transformation, no single company can offer an end-to-end IIoT solution. Opto 22 has developed key partnerships with companies at the edge and in the cloud. At the edge of network, Opto 22 is partnered with Inductive Automation and Cirrus Link Solutions. For data and analytics, Opto 22 is an IBM “Watson Ready for IoT” partner, a Dell “IoT Solutions Partner”, and an AT&T “IoT Partner”.

BYOD is a trend that will continue to grow in the industrial space. In our daily lives, we are connected to everything via our mobile devices and are now accustomed to information at our fingertips. So why not on the plant floor? The groov View mobile interface is embedded it right into the groov EPIC controller.

New technologies like artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0 are opening up the trend towards autonomous operation of industrial facilities. This shift will be a journey- and has already started with more lean & remote operations. We are seeing that shift towards unmanned/or lean-manned and ultimately autonomous. These technologies allow us to move away from traditional ‘automated’ technologies where we are planning for what we know, and go towards autonomous where we can deal with what we don’t know yet.

Examples of technology that we see supporting this trend in 2019:

1. Virtual assistants/ AI – Virtual assistants can be used to monitor, analyze and repair plant operations. These assistants analyze the data, know industrial processes, predict anomalies and provide proactive decision making with machine learning. This technology will provide end users improved profitability with proactive activity recommendations.

2. Condition monitoring with sensors- We are seeing technologies like sensors become both more affordable and also more robust. These sensors are attached to standard equipment and then machine learning modules are used to determine overall asset health and also alert operators when equipment needs assistance. These types of sensors can save significantly on maintenance costs.

3. VR/AR- Augmented and virtual technologies are being used to help less-experienced operators perform complex service interventions using virtual googles and tablets. The goggles allow for the super imposition of computer generated images on the user’s real wolrd view- displaying real time data on actual equipment nearby.

Of course the Energy price volatility in the market also effects the speed and scope of digital transformation projects both in budgeting/planning and execution.

One of the leading edge technology is Blockchain. Blockchain have potential impact anywhere a secure verifiable chain of records is required. In particular in combination with Smart Contracts that allows automation of contractual agreements. Examples are supply chain for critical parts, commodity trading and settlements, Joint Venture accounting, Land Management, secure transmission where verifiable commands are required, identity and certification management etc. etc. TCS Blockchain practice and its delivery organization have already implemented a number of Blockchain solutions in several industry verticals and is bringing that expertise and knowledge to the E&R industry.

We should not forget that at the center of any digital transformation lies the reliance on good verifiable data of known quality of multiple formats and sources. To address this fundamental need TCS has developed number of accelerators for automation of the quality verification of data, conversion of non-digital data to a digital asset and the ingestion of this data to make it usable.

By the very nature of being disruptive these technologies impacts the way work is performed. Therefore a critical success factor for a successful implementation is the change management and dealing with Human side of the business. As the old jobs gets automated or eliminated, re-training of existing workforce is as important as is being able to recruit, retain and provide a career path for the new set of employees with a different set of skills and expectations.
