(Air Date 3/18/24) In the first part of a series on the legacy of lynching in America, we look at Salisbury, MD, where a official apology recently issued by city officials raises questions about the appropriate response, resolution, or reparations to address past harms like lynching. Professor Charles Chavis Jr. authored a book on one of the lynchings the city apologized for, “The Silent Shore; The Lynching of Mathew Williams and the Politics of the Free State (2022)” and gives a first hand account of the research behind the lynching. Also, Prof. David Ikard returns to add some additional insights on the legacy of lynching and how we live with it to this day.

(Air Date 3/14/24) This week bodycam footage was released and showed the gory details of the deadly exchange between a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy and Ryan Gainer, a 15-year-old teen on the autism spectrum. This case highlights the lapses in judgment, training, and compassion we are far too often seeing from law enforcement who engage people who are on the spectrum. Marcos Aguilar Jr, of the Special Needs Network, and Dr. Helena Hansen give thor expertise on why this occurrence is more common than it should be, what steps should have been take by both the family and law enforcement, as well as recommendations for improving the systems and protocols that aim to keep people alive.

Polls show this issue is one of, if not, the leading motivating factor for who is getting their vote. Professors Dale Cecka, and Dr. Niambi Carter join a lively discussion on the state reproductive rights in the country, what is being done in other parts of the globe, and most importantly, how are Black women being associated with an issue that was widely considered only a concern for white women.
