Wolfmueller explains the medieval doctrine of the three estates, and how Martin Luther's interpretation of it was the key political insight of his career. The original idea was that there were three "orders" in life: those who worked, those who prayed, and those who fought. The home, the church, and the state. To be a part of one meant you could not be a part of the others. Luther recognized that, unlike the early Church fathers and medieval theologians, the three estates actually overlap and people are a part of multiple "orders."

Clinging to God and Guns When I was 18 years old I wrote a mindless poem about how I could no longer call myself a Christian because of the history of abuse by the Church over the centuries. I walked away from the faith because I could not distinguish the acts of evil humans within the church and the church itself. But I was a freshman in college. Today we examine an article by a "pastor" in the United Methodist Church who has decided to reject the cross because others have used it as a symbol in commission of evil acts. What drove her to this conclusion? The acts of an anti-semitic, Trump-hating, Nazi who attacked the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
