Previously, we spoke with Chuck Fleischmann, the Republican incumbent running for re-election. Today, we’re speaking with Dr. Mitchell, his Democratic opponent. She’s a Chattanooga physician. The district she seeks to represent includes Hamilton and Bradley county.

The district covers much of East Tennessee, including Hamilton and Bradley County. Fleischmann is a Republican who’s represented the district since 2011. He’s seeking re-election, and faces Democrat Dr. Danielle Mitchell. Today, he joins us to discuss top issues.

It’s becoming more expensive to rent a home or apartment in Chattanooga. Nearly a quarter of Chattanooga renters are severely burdened by the cost, meaning they spend at least half of their income on housing. That’s one startling statistic brought up during the city’s inaugural Housing Connections Conference. Jim Brown, State Director for the NFIB, says it wasn’t a quick decision figuring out who to endorse in Tennessee’s gubernatorial race. The National Federation of Independent Businesses is a political advocacy group for small business owners with 6,000 members in this state and around 325,000 members nationwide. But ultimately, the NFIB chose Republican Bill Lee—who is an NFIB member himself—over Democrat Karl Dean. The announcement was made in Chattanooga at Ruby Falls.

The Last Five Years, a musical by Jason Robert Brown, is in The Chattanooga Theatre Centre this weekend starting on Thursday October 25 th . There are just two characters in the play, Jamie and Cathy. Talking to Richard Winham, the director for the CTC production Garry Posey said he had found previous productions of the musical a “bit dry.” He and his colleagues have taken some liberties with the staging to enliven the show.

Tennessee’s Attorney General is suing to overturn the Affordable Care Act, and a Tennessee group of faith leaders is protesting, saying it would be unchristian to get rid of protections for people who have pre-existing conditions. The Southern Christian Coalition held a press conference in Chattanooga on the front lawn outside Memorial Hospital. The coalition is a statewide, nonpartisan, nondenominational group. This fall more than 20 Future Ready Institutes have begun preparing high school students for careers in fields ranging from engineering to health sciences. Each of the institutes, based in 13 Hamilton County high schools, is preparing students to tackle “real world problems in the classroom,” according to school superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson. Talking to Richard Winham, Blake Freeman, director of Future Ready Institutes for Hamilton County, called the institutes “schools within schools.”
