In this heartfelt episode of Around The Loop Podcast, I sit down with Oscar Lopez — athlete, coach, and mentor who has turned his struggles into strength. Growing up in the special-needs department, Oscar faced constant bullying and challenges that could have broken him. Instead, with the support of his uncle, he discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling at the age of 12.
From those early days on the mat to becoming ranked 9th on the West Coast, Oscar’s journey hasn’t been easy — but it’s shaped the coach and man he is today. Now, at 21, he’s a dedicated head coach for San Marcos Wrestling and Mission Grappling Club, giving back to the community that raised him. His mission is to support kids in the special-needs department, making sure they get the care, attention, and opportunities they deserve, both on and off the mat.
This episode dives deep into Oscar’s personal growth, his commitment to teaching, and how he’s using his platform to inspire the next generation. A true story of resilience, mentorship, and the power of giving back.
