Michael Hoffen and the protagonist in his new book are both teenagers, but there’s quite an age gap between them—about 4,000 years. In Hoffen’s new book, BE A SCRIBE: Working For a Better Life in Ancient Egypt (Callaway Children’s Classics, April 9, 2024), he brings to life the story of a young Egyptian, Pepi, whose father, Kheti, is intent on getting his son a job in the royal court. Hoffen, who has been translating ancient texts since middle school, became fascinated by a 4,000-year-old or so piece of literature from ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom known as The Instruction of Khety, or “The Satire of the Trades.” Under the guidance and collaboration of his two co-authors, Egyptologists Christian Casey and Jen Thum, Hoffen spent three-and-a-half years translating hieroglyphics to modern-day prose and gathering images to tell the story of Kheti and Pepi. Beyond the words, which reveal a wit that transcends 4,000 years, ancient Egypt comes to life with more than 100 beautiful images of vibrant and colorful ancient Egyptian artifacts, paintings, graphics and illustrations that are featured throughout the book. This young author, a scribe himself, has given us a tale that helps us to see just how little the human condition has changed in thousands of years. Parents still want the best for their children and teenagers face important decisions as they set out on their career path. For younger readers, the book serves as an inspiration for their own journey toward gaining greater knowledge, exercising intellectual curiosity and, perhaps, finding their own career paths.

This is C.T.C.S.
London, 1848—For four hundred years, England has been under the control of an immortal fae queen who tricked her way onto the throne. To maintain an illusion of benevolence, Queen Mor grants each of her subjects one opportunity to bargain for their deepest desire.
As Ivy Benton prepares to make her debut, she knows that not even a deal with the queen could fix what has gone wrong: Her family’s social standing is in shambles, her sister is a shadow of her former self, and Ivy’s marriage prospects are nonexistent. So, when the queen announces a competition for Prince Bram’s hand, Ivy is the first to sign her name in blood. What a bargain can’t fix, a crown certainly could.
Ivy soon finds herself a surprising front-runner—with the help of an unexpected ally: Prince Bram’s brother, the rakish Prince Emmett, who promises to help Ivy win his brother’s heart…for a price. But as the season sweeps Ivy away, with glittering balls veiling the queen’s increasingly vicious trials, Ivy realizes there’s more at stake than just a wedding. Because all faerie bargains come with a cost, and Ivy may have discovered hers too late.
Katie and Delaney, inseparable since childhood, find their paths diverging in their 30s. While Katie is happily committed and living with her boyfriend, Delaney is still single and living with a roommate. Despite the differences in their lives, their friendship is still a top priority. They've always been the most important person in each other's lives. That is, until Katie's boyfriend proposes. To soften the blow, Katie plans a nostalgic trip to their childhood beach town, intending to share the news in a familiar setting. But the journey takes unexpected turns, courtesy of a bizarre rental homeowner, a chance encounter with a former classmate, a bachelor party, and a few potential love interests. Caught in a whirlwind of emotions, Katie hesitates and withholds the news from Delaney, putting their lifelong friendship in peril. Funny, fresh, and full of heart, ADULT BEST FRIENDS is the first feature from filmmaking Delaney Buffett (director/co-writer/star) and Katie Corwin (co-writer/star). The pair drew upon their own decades-long friendship and brought together a close-knit crew and cast, that includes Zachary Quinto, Cazzie David, Mason Gooding, Casey Wilson, Owen Thiele, and Benjamin Norris, to capture the joy of growing up with a best friend - and the angst of potentially moving beyond them.
