  • Leah Johnson Releases The Book Ellie Engle Saves Herself

    Ellie

Engle doesn’t stand out. Not at home, where she's alone with her pet
fish since her dad moved away and her mom has to work around the clock .
Not at the bakery, where she helps out old Mr. Walker on the weekends.
And definitely not at school, where her best friend Abby—the coolest,
boldest, most talented girl in the world—drags Ellie along on her
never-ending quest to “make her mark.” To someone else, a life in the
shadows might seem boring, or lonely. But not to Ellie. As long as she
has Abby by her side and a comic book in her hand, she’s quite content.
    Too
bad life didn’t bother checking in with Ellie. Because when a freak
earthquake hits her small town, Ellie wakes up with the power to bring
anything back to life with just her touch. And when a video of her using
her powers suddenly goes viral, Ellie’s life goes somewhere she never
imagined—or wanted: straight into the spotlight.
    Surviving
middle school is hard enough. Surviving middle school when paparazzi are
camped out on your front lawn and an international pop singer wants you
to use your powers on live tv and you might be in love with your best
friend, but she doesn’t know it? Absolutely impossible.

    Leah Johnson always

wanted to be a superhero, but she became a writer instead, which she
thinks is the next-best thing. Her best-selling debut novel, You Should See Me in a Crown, was a Stonewall Honor Book, the inaugural Reese’s Book Club YA Pick, and named one of Time’s
100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time. Leah lives in Indianapolis,
where she writes books about Black girls with big hearts, plays fetch
with the best dog in the world, and talks about Miles Morales to anyone
who will listen. Ellie Engle Saves Herself is her middle grade debut.

  • Rachel Cargel Releases The Book A Renaissance Of My Own

    From a highly lauded modern

voice in feminism and racial justice comes a deeply personal and
insightful testament to the power of reimagining to dismantle the
frameworks and systems that no longer serve us while building new ones
    that
    do.

    There are breaking points

in all our lives when we realize that the way things have been done
before just don't work for us anymore, be it the way we approach our
relationships, our belief systems, our work, our education, even our
    rest.
For activist, philanthropist, and CEO Rachel E. Cargle, reimagining-the
act of creating in our minds that which does not exist but that we
believe can and should-has been a lifelong process. Reimagining served
as the most powerful catalyst for Cargle's personal
transformation from a small-town Christian wife to an incisive queer
    feminist voice of a generation.

In A Renaissance of Our Own,

we witness the sometimes painful but always inspiring breaking points
in Cargle's life that fostered a truer identity. These defining moments
offer a blueprint for how we must all use our imagination-the
space that sees beyond limits-to live in alignment with our highest
values and to craft a world independent of oppressive structures, both
personal and societal. Cargle now invites you to acknowledge ways of
being that stem from societal expectations instead
of your personal truth, and to embark on a renaissance of your own. She
provides the very tools and prompts that she used to unearth her own
truth, tools that opened her up to being a more authentic feminist and
    purpose-driven matriarchal leader.

  • The Daily Mess Teach Your Reach

    June 7, 2023

Reaching into the presence of what’s quickly becoming a new day.  Without the activation, today will turn out

to be like yesterday and the day before.
    My parents were always reaching.
I’m sure it’s because their retirement didn’t come with too much of a
payoff.  As a daily writer my reaching
involves being transparent with who I am.
I need a return on my investment.
It’s based on what am I reaching for? How far should I reach out?  Why am I reaching?  Am I doing it because it helps me feel
secure?  I don’t want to accept life as
is.  What’s your reach?  It has to be bigger than a goal and larger
than a dream.  The reach has to include
    what you achieve.
